An Ethernet modem will definitely work! Usb modem will only work if u get drivers for it! No issues!

my card, D-Link some model (the latest one) was detected peacefully! and my internet also worked after putting in the right settings

Dear Friends,I have installed Linux RH9 on VMWare. My host operating system is Win XP. I got Ethernet modem (ADSL 220BX) installed. I would like to know how to configure my broadband connection on Linux. Thanks,Viru

Anyways, since you are using it within vmware, thats an additional level of complexity - basically just edit your NIC settings in the virtual machine, and set it to NAT - thats the simplest & best - it will directly get your internet connection, and also share the same public IP as your host OS.
