Is Hotstar live real-time for you guys?

My friends are getting way faster than me 🙁 .
what is your latency to this ip?

Should not matter, as the video will be sent from akamai IP which will be different. Try refreshing?
Btw ping to that IP is 45ms.
Ping to www.hotstar.com is 25ms.

I get under 6ms to Hotstar.com. Hotstar uses Akamai which has a datacenter in Bangalore, so you should get under 20ms at worst.

Code:
root@OpenWrt:~# ping www.hotstar.com
PING www.hotstar.com (117.239.141.120): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 117.239.141.120: seq=0 ttl=60 time=6.146 ms
64 bytes from 117.239.141.120: seq=1 ttl=60 time=5.856 ms
64 bytes from 117.239.141.120: seq=2 ttl=60 time=5.945 ms
64 bytes from 117.239.141.120: seq=3 ttl=60 time=5.941 ms
64 bytes from 117.239.141.120: seq=4 ttl=60 time=5.951 ms
64 bytes from 117.239.141.120: seq=5 ttl=60 time=6.410 ms
64 bytes from 117.239.141.120: seq=6 ttl=60 time=6.298 ms
64 bytes from 117.239.141.120: seq=7 ttl=60 time=5.938 ms
64 bytes from 117.239.141.120: seq=8 ttl=60 time=5.867 ms
^C
--- www.hotstar.com ping statistics ---
9 packets transmitted, 9 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 5.856/6.039/6.410 ms

I watch IPL with my friends in discord. So they react to that thing and i'll watch that happening in my screen 5-8 secs later ,which is frustrating thing in watching live cricket 🙁 . You guys getting different routes or am i missing something here? . Is DNS the culprit ? Let me change it.

Okay it is Google's DNS which made me to connect to that IP for Hotstar . Here is BSNL & Cloud fare's DNS given ip for hotstar.com

After some quick research , google DNS also messed up with IP for reddit.com also .

If I use 1.1.1.1, it takes me to reddit like this

unknown.png

and 61.1.1.1 messes up for this one on pingplotter but somehow website loaded on chrome (maybe IP not ping-able?)

So in conclusion I have to use 1.1.1.1 which itself has 50ms delay

Anyway Hotstar does not provide enough bandwidth bit-rate for live videos.. its around 2-6 Mbps only. Not good enough for HD sports streaming. The ball movement in many TV's are jittery. 12-20 Mbps needed for smooth sports streaming.

Yep I seriously thought Amazon should have bought the rights for digital streaming. Their transit is also huge for that much demand
They can leverage the advantage of owning Twitch for a long time

As Hotstar uses AWS for backend , it is going to be pretty costly for them

@Joyous it's only 5mbps max yep its jittery I watch it on laptop so mine is not that pixelated . If you watch it using >32" TV's you can easily notice the picture compression . It's India bro what can you expect , they want to save money on everything .

i think its likely that Hotstar has low bitrate because many people in India are watching on data (high bitrate will eat up your data quickly). Hotstar is owned by Disney so I don't think they have as much money issues now.

@JB701 They have their own app , so they could easily modify bitrate availability restriction if user is on mobile data or they could provide high bitrate exclusively for desktop browsers. Simply I think they don't have Infrastructure for streaming with high bitrates.

It is most probably bitrate restriction because Amazon`s per GB bandwidth rate is quite high I guess comparing to the yearly 400 Hotstar is charging . If they give 15-20 Mbps bitrate streaming. (TV streams are at 50Mbps but they vary) . Thats 9GB in one hour and 27 GB for a 3 hour match(approx)

27 multiplied by 12rupees($0.170) is 324 rupees which is just for one match. We pay 400 for yearly Hotstar.

This is just an assumption still. The reason why Netflix and Amazon Prime plays at HD is because they have huge transit and peer everywhere with ISP or at the IX
