Does anyone have any experience in achieving this for their network setup?

I'm looking to set up a primary and a few secondary nodes, all running a variant of OPENWRT, but working as a full mesh wifi system. I've read about the OPENWRT Batman project but needs someone who's tried it to share their experience.

Or in your opinion, should I just go with a proprietary system for whatever reason(s)? Kindly state those reasons as well.

When you say mesh, are you referring to using wireless backhaul between the APs?

Or just a single SSID wireless network with multiple APs with wired backhaul between them?

@varkey I prefer to set up ethernet wired nodes everywhere. I am looking for something that automatically can perform STP (spanning tree), so that it works as a full mesh. Wireless backhaul might need extra antennas, so it might really narrow down the hardware choices, so not really looking for it.
Basically the poor man's solution to mesh, but it must be based on an open source software like OPENWRT, and not locked down to proprietary tech.
That way we get mesh, but still with all the granular control we get with open source, vlans, snmp, etc.
