@Yatch I'll revert to you with results for those IPs later today in the evening.

@Yatch is chandan nagar next to yerwada? I thought airtel started ftth there if I'm not mistaken? Asking @Funkatronic if he's monitoring the forum

@vishalrao Chandan Nagar just starts about a km after Phoenix Mall on Nagar Rd..when going towards Kharadi

@Chip sure, take your own time, no worries.
@vishalrao Chandna Nagar is between Viman Nagar and Kharadi, and the only major ISP is JioFiber, no Airtel presence here. Jio came around 30 days back and have their distribution boxes (S1 & S2) installed on my terrace.

@Chip Thanks for the results. How about 15.184.0.253/ 95.177.160.5 on Airtel? These ping results are atleast 4-5 times better than the ones I get on JioFiber

No response from the 1st IP. AWS ME I think. Request timed out.

@Chip Thanks for your time and effort, Appreciate it. The latencies seem similar on TSBB and Airtel. I've setup my own personal VPN on Microsoft Azure and Amazon cloud to have better routing.
Edit: Actually you pinged 15.184.0.25 instead of 15.184.0.253 for AWS ME, but I suppose the ping should be around 40.

@Chip or @morecrap or @nuclearrambo

Since IPv4 is CGNATed, do they hand out IPv6 addresses for free or is there a payment required?

After getting a IPv6 address, how do you translate IPv4 clients to be able to connect? (I use IPv4 exclusively in my network)

I was planning on setting up site-to-site VPN with opnsense with my parent's house in Mumbai (they have Tata Sky) and am trying to get around this whole CGNAT issue.

@raj2021 I am not sure if TS hands out public IPv6 addresses. Please check with their call centre. I am on IPv4 CG-NAT since I don't have special requirements.

They hand out public IPv6 addresses. I have a bunch of virtual machines configured in bridged mode and all of them get assigned a unique public IPv6 address. Every device in my home thats connected to TSBB network gets its own public IPv6. That has been my observation. I guess that is because of /64 subnet mask assignment isn't it? I am a little rusty on IPv6 networking. Someone can give better explanation of what /64 means.

@nuclearrambo what's the procedure to get a public IPv6 from TS? Can you guide on the setup please? I am finding my Asus AC3200 to be a bit restrictive and may move to OPNSense or pfSense open source software on a mini PC.

For the /64 I think this prefix means it is a unique address assigned to 1 host. You can read more here: Understanding IP Addressing and CIDR Charts

That said it is time I brushed up on my ancient network engineering skills 🙂

@Chip I don't think there is any special request. You get it by default. The IP that you would get will be dynamic. You can request Static IPv6 through their app or over call to their CC.

Also, going by that link /64 that the subnet has 64 bits and therefore you have remaining 64 bits resulting in 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 IPv6 addresses. So thats a lot and looking by the way I am getting unique public IPv6 for each and every device. This confirms it.

@nuclearrambo how did you configure your router? DHCP6 or with PPPoE? And how does TS DHCP assign IPv6 addresses to your LAN devices? Are those internal IPv6 addresses? Bit confused so kindly elaborate.

I am using the default Nokia G-2425 router. Its configured in PPPoE mode.
Those IPs aren't internal. All are public. I just confirmed by pinging those from my VPS.

@messyhanibal it is a CG NAT IP and and your public IP and WAN IP are different. If you opt for IPv6 you get a public one
