so what's the current status of rcs on samsung's own sms app. samsung community seems to indicate that jio and vodafone has support for it. airtel is not supported so can't check at my end.
Is it operator dependent?
I am on JIO, and I could see those settings on my A8+ as well as S20+.
I think we need to enable some Advanced Message and Calling for that.
But my default sms app is Microsoft SMS Organiser, so never used Samsung app.
Google Messages is powered by Google's own Jibe servers so it works for all. Samsung depends upon mobile service provider. Jio has offered rcs since starting on their platform. So it is supported on third party clients as well. Now i wonder if Samsung can communicate with Messages because backend server are managed by different companies.
RCS was designed to be powered by operators like calls. But interest has been low so Google ended up using their own backend.
Works on Samsung M31 & M21 with a Jio sim but the implementation is v sloppy. When u search for a name while composing a sms you will notice a small dot against the picture circle that is an indication that the number is a jio number but its not fool proof & is not visible in some cases. Another indication is the delivery receipt for a sms will pop up in the notification area with the ringtone whereas if it goes via data the delivery/read receipt is seen next to the sms. If it goes via data it will not be counted as sms & will not be counted in the 100/day limit & not visible in the jio app.
I tried Google messages just now & sent messages to a friend who has airtel & a jio sim. Messages sent to BOTH sims went as sms. Even though receipent phone supports rcs & a jio sim which supports rcs.
But when I sent messages via Samsung messages to the same friend, messages to airtel sim go as sms and messages to jio sim go as data.🤦
i am pming you my number. i am using google messages with rcs enabled on airtel. try sending me a message through samsung messages... this one should be interesting if google jibe is interoperable with jio servers.
it would logically work fine through google messages at both end.
Just noticed Goggle messages says Samsung M31 does not support RCS😞. Both phones used are Samsung M31. What a bummer. But strangely Samsung's own messages app supports it??? Something very fishy here.
@socrates My Redmi Note 5, when I reinstall sometimes shows it as not supported. You just have to close and reopen it later and then you can activate it. It'll stay working then.
I reinstalled Google Messages (GM) & this time it showed my phone (jio sim) as supporting chat features. I sent a msg to an Asus max pro m1 (jio sim) wth GM it detected destination correctly fr a chat msg. And it went thru as chat msg. So that works.
Next I uninstalled GM and used default Samsung Messages app (SM) to send to the same phone again it detected it incorrectly fr sms only & not chat though its default msg app is GM with correct settings. So sending (source) from another msg app though it supports chat features will NOT deliver it as chat though receipent app is GM. @Sushubh Did the experiment works fine with GM at both ends but not otherwise atleast not with SM as of now with above mentioned phones & jio sim at both ends. Hope this helps others.😁
When I tried the experiment yesterday with my friend, his phone has airtel sim in slot 1 & jio sim in slot 2. Maybe thats why it didn't work. He found that his phone does not support rcs though both of us use Samsung M31. Also other members have observed that currently GM does not support dual sim functionality yet.
