How safe are Indian cars?

Among all the car manufacturers in India I say maruti has the weakest body strength and the lowest maintenance and others costs for rectification
 
Even Tata nano was a tank. I had multiple accidents in that and in one of the accident, road was wet and there was stationary car in front of me (corolla). I applied brakes but the tires locked up and went skidding and rear ended that car. There was damage to my car and corolla's boot won't close after that. Had it been an maruti car, I might have not been alive to tell the tale. From that very day decided never to buy a maruti car.
 
@mikrotik if safety is concerned nothing can beat Volkswagen especially polo thanks to their German standards ...on the down sides being high maintenance costs
 
If you talk about Volkswagen, they have drastically reduced the standard of their cars. If you have a car that was imported as CBU, then you are fine. If you have an Indian manufactured unit, then it is greatly reduced.
 
The polo still is rated 4 stars so even by lower standards, VW is leagues ahead of Kia, Hyundai, Maruti
 
Saw a video yesterday where a loaded truck fell sideways on a Nexon. The passengers were alive. Let me see if I can find the video.

Also the abs of maruti cars is terrible, ,It gets triggered even with slighter braking, and when it happens, a lot of grinding noise comes from the pedal, and the braking pedal is forcing us to remove the foot from the brakes. I had that kind of experience. When I told about it in the customer center, they have told its designed like that


With Volkswagen polo it was very smooth, with no hassles
 
Hopefully Tata is getting everyone to notch up their safety game. But their are people who still value Mileage more than safety and manufacturers still want to cater for them
 
@shashankb In Delhi, you can hardly go above 40 km/h. The traffic situation is really bad. And considering the gas prices, I don't blame Indian consumers if they settle for something that's less safe. A friend of mine has a Tiago which has done around 42,000 KMs. He gets 15-16 kmpl and even better on highway as he travels from Delhi to Punjab quite frequently. He's been pretty happy with the mileage and the car itself. Besides good fuel economy the car is quite safe. So, I would say that Tata is doing pretty well.

@devangpatel Right. I'm not sure if Indian version has been tested.
