WarnerMedia will discontinue HBO and WB TV channels in India, Pakistan, Maldives and Bangladesh later this year as the entertainment conglomerate struggles to find a sustainable business model in South Asia despite operating in the region for more than a decade.

Warner Media cited a dramatic market shift in the pay-TV industry for its decision. It said it will continue to offer Cartoon Network and Pogo in India, and distribute CNN International in the country.

HBO also maintains a content syndication partnership with Disney’s Hotstar in India. So the streamer will continue to offer HBO’s shows such as “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”.

This is huge. Channels will go off air on December 15.

That's sad news. HBO was one of my channels for watching movies and now that too is gone.

oh come on why telecasting in India is going to a dark era Indian channels are not ready to spend on their deals with the current partners basically Bundesliga which star sports had rights failed to renew saying that only 600k will be provided instead of 1.4M, even LA Liga same now seeing HBO go its very sad

Officially stated reasons are extremely low cost of cable and falling viewership. Among English Movie channels, Star Movies and Sony Pix has the highest viewership.

They could have made some better deals by broadcasting good movies, taking a leaf from Star movies. Increasing the price by a reasonable amount would have helped them sustain the model.

I guess the new TRAI rules on channel pricing might be one of the reasons for falling viewership.
That's the only reason honestly. For us it was a 4x increase, that too even less channels than before. Disconnected cable, went to d2h, got the basic regional plan with no paid channels (only news).

Besides HBO and WB censor way too much, even subtitles for almost all the movies I've seen on them. They don't like the word "shit", it's replaced with "crap". 🤷‍♂️

If anyone from the TV industry ever come across this thread, if you want us to pay money, then don't shove it with ads.

Looks like slowly non streaming channels are dying out due to reduced viewership and reduced revenues. I think zee will be next. They already closed one of their movie channels and also axn got closed.

I am one of the few people who actually prefer dth over streaming

Yeah in disguise of giving customer more choices, the monthly cost of DTH has sky rocketed. Earlier I used to get all Hindi channels like Star, Sony, Zee, Colors at 250-300 per month on Tata Sky. Now I am paying Rs 250 per month just for one star sports, sony hindi pack, 5-6 hindi movies channel (excluding zee cinema) and few regional channels.

Don't know who the real winner is in the end after this TRAI new rules. Since even the channels are losing revenue and customers are paying more. Also it is becoming a herculean task for many people to choosing and dropping channels. I have used Dish TV app, and its super slow and cumbersome in this matter. At least Tata Sky mobile app and website is very fluid in this area of managing my pack.
