I saw some Alcatel/Lucent as well as Huawei ONUs being sold on AliExpress for quite cheap.

Airtel has supplied me with Nokia G-140W-C modem, and it is quite deficient in features so to say. Bridging works when it does, untagged VLANs not supported, VoIP information cannot be edited, etc.

I was wondering if it is possible to use an off the shelf Huawei/Alcatel modem (since they authenticate on the basis of SN, I have a strong suspicion that they do not manually provision each and every ONU, they just add a wildcard SN like ALCA12345**********). There have been reports of some users switching modems between their friends, and it does work, however I don't understand the part that how Airtel TR-069 can deliver the right details if the SN number is changed. Either you entirely delete the TR-069 config, or you phone up airtel to change your SN (which I guess they won't agree to), else how could it work ?

Is it even possible to ask Airtel to replace my Nokia modem with a Huawei one ?

The Serial Number is not random, it can be decomposed as follows :-

1. PPP Interface MAC (pon_100) ~ AA:BB:CC:XX:EE:FF
2. GEMPORT Remote Debugging Interface MAC (pon_d4097) ~ GG:HH:II:JJ:KK:LL

The SN for such a device is :- AABBCC-ALCLIIJJKKLL

Device is identified based on MAC, hence think swapping modems would not lead to connection issues, but the device will be identified as someone else's.

You could ask airtel backend to change your modem, but i think that could become a hassle anyway...

Thanks @Soumil

If this is so, how does TR-069 work in case of bridge mode ? I have seen people posting modem configs in Bridge Mode which still have a TR-069 PPPoE WAN interface a active.

Also, is PPPoE dialup locked to a specific MAC ?

How/Where can I see my SN number of my Nokia G-140W-C ? The SN it shows on the status page is just :
1601967286118.webp

I guess that on my new modem, I can just disable TR-069 completely, and go ahead to create a WAN and a VoIP profile manually, things should work ?

This is an off site setup located in a city far away from where I live, and I have been utterly irritated with just how bad the Nokia G-140W-C is. I just want a plain modem which can just do plain bridging, doesn't reset itself with new TR-069 configs so I can put a pfSense box behind it to handle everything.
