Hai there.
I am a new member here ( but have been a frequent reader of posts here especially related to BSNL broadband and fiber ). So finally after canvassing my neighbours and convincing BSNL officials, they have finally extended FTTH lines to my locality ( I live in a very rural place ) and i am steps away from finally getting FTTH connection. ( No, no LCOs in between ). I bought a TP-Link GPON router ( managed to 🙂 ) TP-Link-XN020-G3v-300Mbps-Wireless-Gigabit.
But due to some issues, BSNL technician is not able to pair that with their OLT and is asking me to get a Netlink GPON ( which seems very common thought its a chinese product wrapped in a new box by an indian firm with semi chinese firmware and yeah i know TPLINK is chinese too but atleast its better functionality wise). So what do you guys suggest me, should i insist BSNL to set my tplink somehow ( may take many more days ) or just return it and get a netlink one and get the connection today or tomorrow. I know basics of networking and i am planning to set it this router to bridge mode very soon ( I got an archer c6 already or dedicate a RBPI for this purpose ) but i dont want to do that right away. So my queries are.. is netlink reliable ?.
Does it support port forwarding ( if i am using it in router mode itself )
From other answers in the forum, i think it works well in bridge mode.
Welcome opinion from you guys.

Netlink with bridge mode Archer C6. These rebranded Chinese ONTs work perfectly fine in bridge mode.

Maybe ask your local BSNL office if they have allowed your ONT serial number/MAC address in their OLT setup . Technically a ONT should work with any OLT if they match the Fiber technology (GEPON/ EPON) and the Type of ONT

@shashankb BSNL office technician has been really helpful but looks like he is facing some weird issue this time. Looks like he needs time to get into the root cause. So for me it boils down to waiting few more days to get this thing fixed.. or just say yes for Netlink modem and get the connection today or tomorrow.
So question is like is the wait worth it ?.is there any advantge of using TP-Link interms of stability/performance/routing or anything over netlink ones
(I will get full refund for TPlink )

@varkey in almost all the thread here ( which drew my attention ) you had replies with perfect details and technical informations. 🙂 .. can i invite you to comment your opinion here.. 🙂

Personally, I am not a big fan of all in one devices, I'd like to split the devices into separate roles. I understand that in a regular home environment at times this might be overkill. However I'd still recommend at least having a basic ONT in bridge mode, and then a wireless router where the PPPoE and other things are configured.

In your case, since you already have an Archer C6, there is no real point in going for the TP-Link XN020-G3v. I'd say get the basic Netlink ONT, use it in bridge mode. You wouldn't have any real problem when ONT is used as a dumb modem in bridge mode. Even if you get the TP-Link, I'd still recommend having it in bridge mode (with wireless disabled, it's only a Wireless N 300 device anyway)

How much does each device cost?

Thanks for the reply @varkey ..as usual the reply was spoton. 🙂.. I do agree with you and i usually seperate the tasks and dedicate different devices for different roles. But here i was wondering if there is any issues when it comes to the fiber thing. I haven't been following any of the FTTH discussions or terminologies as my home is kind of like a very rural locality. ( Like i was the only Broadband customer in a 200m circle in last 14+ years. 🙂 ) and i never thought i would get FTTH anytime soon, but then all of a sudden the private contractors popped up, i managed to get their number.. convinced several of my neighbours to opt fiber ( thanks to online school classes these days, i could easily make them understand the benefits ), so i finally they extended line to my area.
My main concern was if in the bridge mode is their any processing involed in the modem at all, or it acts like a basic dumb media convertor. From your reply i guess in bridge modem it will be just a media convertor and it is not going to make any difference performance wise. Is there any factor like media convertor ( or whatever it is called ) will be better and noise free in TP-Link than in Netlink..

Also since many here suceeded in configuring it as a bridge, i dont think i will end up with a netlink router with no ways to bridge it with my archer c6. One of the reason to consider tp link was that i didnt want to endup with netlink doing my routing in case i fail configuring bridge.

Also another offtopic, you just mentioned about disabling wireless in bridge mode. My assumption was that, in the bridge mode i can actually use the rest of the ports and wifi as basically a switch. So bridge mode by default disables wifi and other ports ?..

Regarding the cost. I am getting tplink for 4.5k and netlink for 3.5k (I am sure these prices are jacked up but the availability seems limited in the local market). Let me try to find out the cost of their basic modem. I will keep it posted.

@JB701 the price i mentioned was for Netlink one with WIFI and 2 Giga ports.. Any idea how much that costs ?.. i know the price i was offered is high.. but trying to find out by how much its overpriced.. 🙂

Also another side query, should the modem support voice to avail voice functionality that bsnl is offering or is their like any convertors available which i can plug into lan and get a RJ11 On the otherside.. Whats the technology used for voice functionality.
Is it somelike voip phone ?

@varkey Another reason i decided to pay this guy is to get it up and running real quick.. i didnt want to wait another week for the modem to arrive. Due to heavy rain last few days, the BSNL copper seems to have issue somewhere and i am hit with lots of line noises and stability issues. They are going to take days to localize the issue and fix it and iam struggling to work with my Vodafone 4g.

@varkey one more query. I just followed your thread about setting up voice and sip. So was wondering in order to make it possible do I need to get ont with that rj11 port or will it still work if get a basic ont without any rj11 port

You can refer the actual prices here: GPON GEPON NETLINK OPTON FOBER HIGH QUALITY FTTH but good luck finding one at that prices.

If you are planning on using a router anyway, why not get a modem without wifi? They are cheaper and you won't be paying for things you don't use.

you are better off getting an ONT with the FXS port because, setting up SIP is only successful on Windows PC as of now. Doesnt work in android. So if you need to use wifi then get an ONT with FXS port.
