Hello Guys,

I have a decade old airtel connection which was upgraded to 40Mbps plan of VDSL in 2017, now with new plans airtel is asking me to upgrade to Xstream fiber 100mbps plan with cost reduction. My issue is that the VDSL connection had underground cable in the house so it was easy upgrade.

However for Xstream fiber they are not doing it underground cable, they are only doing over wall wire installation which looks bad & this wire cannot reach my computer desk as there is a bathroom 2 walls in between with full height tiles. We live in Multi story flats & RWA is not allowing airtel to draw wire from outside building else the problem would be easy to solve.

Point 1. This is my present VDSL router next to computer drawing power from the UPS so no interruption to zoom meetings at all. All underground cable.
Point 2. This location is what Airtel is wanting to install new modem, I will have to buy extra UPS just for this router else cant get uninterrupted connection.
WE have power backup which takes 30-60 sec.
Point 3. alternative installation
Point 4. is where kids computer is installed using wifi dongle connected to main router.
Point 5. is TV area which I plan to buy this year.

MY question is as follows:
If I install new router at Point 2 along with new UPS can I get good coverage at Point 1 (18 feet away with 2 bathroom walls in between)
& point 5 (25feet away) without much speed loss?
If not then can I use old airtel VDSL router as wifi extender so I get better speed & coverage?

Hats off for such detail post.
How is Airtel going to bring wire to point A. using existing VDSL ducts? or new drill through the walls.
From point 2 to point 1 I doubt you will get 5G coverage. it will be 2G coverage and expect decent speed..(probably similar to Point 4 speed that you get from point 1) You can think of using existing Router in Wireless repeater mode in case you face issue at point 1

Offtopic. instead of buying new UPS for router, just power the router using pass through battery bank(much cost effective)

Thanks I like to make things clear as much as I can :) so discussion is productive.

How is Airtel going to bring wire to point A. using existing VDSL ducts? or new drill through the walls.
Yes they plan to drill hole above the main door to bring the wire inside, the building has a wire duct for jio & airtel wires running outside the main entrance of flats.

just power the router using pass through battery bank(much cost effective)
You mean a powerbank? but then that powerbank would need to be unplugged & charged mostly after 1-2 days, isn't it?
Moreover does the Xstream router allows to be powered with powerbank?

In case it is coming via Main door. Point 2 seems to be the best place,

Yes, I mean powerbank.
Just get a USB to Power cable...use this cable from the powerbank to run your router.
Keep the powerbank with charger 24/7....it will act as UPS for the router ...total max 1K
search youtube lot of DIY also available in case you are not getting the USB to power pin cable

Is your present VDSL adequate for your needs? If yes, then why change?
If you really want to change, then guess the proposed location is the best option. Taking the wire to point 3 over the wall would look bad. Another option is to install it parallel to point 3, installed on the wall at the left side of the entry passage, just before where your Drg room set up is located, provided you have some power supply nearby. But I have doubts if the wifi signal will carry to your main computer (present VDSL) location, in which case, you may need a repeater near the entry of the room where your present set up is, to cover the main computer and the proposed TV.

Where exactly is this duct situated? jus outside the main gate or near your utility area.?

Yes the duct is just outside the main door & that is connected directly to internal wiring running underground inside the flat on which I use VDSL as of now.

I will surely try this powerbank idea it saves me the cost & very lightweight too, hope I can buy the usb to power cable as suggested.

Its mostly adequate but I am paying higher amount that too for 40mbps connection, where as new plans are offering 100mbps speed & lower cost that too unlimited 3.3TB per month.

Point 3 has a a socket nearby & if I can get the powerbank to power the Router then this location will be ideal as its the center of the house.

I shared the same map with airtel installation team, they told me best is to install the router in master bedroom (near the gate of point 5) that way you will have all 4 areas well covered, they propose to bring the wire at roof height & drill 2 holes only.

Yes I can do that too so I will be on same 40mbps with less cost,
but nowdays kids online classes plus zoom meetings happening so the upload speed is capped at 8mbps which at times hamper the online experience in VDSL hence the need to upgrade to 100mbps 799/- plan.
