In an alternative reality, one would be able to complain about this to Advertising Standards Council of India and get them to stop using the phrase truly unlimited in any kind of promo material.

(y) Hear, hear! Sadly we can only dream of such a scenario here. :(

All this "Unlimited" bullshit has irritated me no end ever since I first came across this POS term called 'F'UP in 2009 (Airtel started this nonsense in India, and naturally all other ISPs eagerly followed suit).

I think sify did it first. At one point of time they had a fup of 150MB per day? Maybe not. Before fup arrived... You basically had data limited plans. I think my first airtel plan had a monthly capacity of 500MB 🤔 it was amazing when I dumped local cable connection because for the first time in my life I experienced stable internet connectivity that just worked!

In any case... High speed plans would never have been possible in early days without fups. It's just that it took them a lot of time to get it to reasonable levels with top ups available.

First to introduce FUPs in India was definitely Airtel in 2009, followed soon after by Tata Indicom. Not sure about Sify, only ever used it for 6 months around 2002 or 2003-ish. Hilarious to read Airtel's pathetic excuses/explanations as well. Also simultaneously maddening how the pathetic morons at TRAI (paid off?) failed to do anything about it, despite thousands of us mailing and calling them (and Airtel of course) to complain. No high speeds back then - only 64/128/256 kbps plans in use by general public. No excuses; it was a money grab, pure and simple.

Nope, that's not about monthly FUP. After reading the thread it's clear they changed their plan so that daytime downloading was restricted (probably to manage high load), while during the night from 10PM to 8AM downloads were unrestricted. I remember clearly that other ISPs provided such night-time 'unlimited' download plans too.

Crappy FUP concept was brought to India by Airtel in 2009.

We can curse jio as much as we like. We can even hate Reliance and Ambani. But the fact remains, they revolutionized telecom sector and made it affordable for everyone. Now they are doing the same with broadband.

If not for jio, chor Airtel will still be looting us with their over price plans and limited data. I still remember before jio fibre I was paying Airtel 1400 rupees per month for only 100gb and 40mbps speed.

It the change in technology that has revolutionised. You can name vsnl for looting when internet was launched in India. And you think ambani is the saviour? Then why there has been constant increase in price on their plan for mobility?
You can any names for airtel but their customer service has always been top notch. They have been humble and not disrespectful.
Jio won't even act on complaints through pgportal. They are thugs. Until now they were running a scam of giving 10% upload speed. So don't go gaga over jio or ambani

This wasn't true in my case with wired connection. Until 2015 in my area there was only MTNL DSL available (back then 4Mb down 1Mb up unlimited cost 4k/month).
After which, DEN came and started providing 50 Down 4 Up for 2k a month with 150GB FUP (back then DEN wasn't owned by Jio).
Then a short while after, Excitel came in and started providing symmetric 50Mbps for 1700 a month.
And soon after, all the local providers started giving cheap symmetric connections. Though QoS varies .

Quite right. 10% upload was ridiculous. And Airtel has way better customer service. Considering before Airtel I had bsnl whose CC was non existent. Although I haven't had too many interactions with jio CC. In 2+ years the connection had issue all of 3 times and resolved within a day or 2. And I am not a fan of Ambani or jio. Just stating the positives jio has brought. The negatives are there for all to see too. In the end we the consumers should benefit. I hope the broadband prices fall further in another 6 months.

Only thing I appreciate about jio is they invested in laying fiber even in small towns, though a lot of work still needs to be done. Not a fan of jio or reliance it will be my last option always.

Airtel blaming poltics is funny for years they were sleeping and only interested in providing services to "premium customers".
