New broadband pricing on hold
Bangalore: TRAI's new rates for leasing international telecommunication lines by BPO firms and Internet Service Providers which would bring down the cost of broadband connection at the user levels failed take off on Thursday as scheduled. On Wednesday a TDSAT (Telecom Dispute settlement Appellate Tribunal) ruling set aside the September 8 order by TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) which brought down the price of leasing IPLCs (International Private Leased Circuits) by almost 70%. TRAI?s order will be held back, following an appeal by VSNL, till October 3 when TDASAT is expected to give its final decision.

This is the second time in six months that TDSAT has held back TRAI's order. Originally, the new pricing was to be implemented from April 1, 2005. However, VSNL appealed against the order claiming the pricing hurts its business. In March, TDSAT sent the order back to TRAI to consider VSNL?s concerns.

Wonder how this affects the Home900 with Airtel ?

I don think it will! It must have been priced with current conditions in mind!

If that is so, all is good. But i can't help thinking the increase from 128kbs to 256kbs for the same price was with the expectation that there would be a massive drop in costs 70% !!! ie profits. The same would apply to any other ISP ie Hathway.

Hathway did it in April! they upgraded same plan in same way! Anyways It rarely happens that any ISP downgrades their plans! If VSNL defends saying it will affect their Business, then do you think all these other ISPs will keep quiet?

BTW you must have Read the Whole Article in TOI! Private Players have argued with the Government for last mile connectivity using BSNL and MTNL infrastructure! Something that has already been talked somewhere in the forums! And if this really happens, then its gonna besome Battle out there!
