Hi Team,

Newbie here.
I recently got my BSNL broadband connection upgraded to FTTH.
The speeds and all are good. The operator in my area has provided Syrotech wdont 1110 GPON ont.
The ONT is a rebranded chinese product with a potato UI and poor security support. I could not find a decent one from Nokia or Huawei.
Basically 3 issues with the present ONT.
  • No 5GHz Radio
  • Wifi password length support is only 16 characters. I want to use the same SSID and password as my previous one so I don't have to reset it on multiple IOT devices at my place. But this device doesn't allow a password that long.
  • Cannot persist Wifi settings. SSID and password are reset after every restart. (Tried deleting logs and all). Looks like a device specific issue or may be it is pulling the config from OLT instead of the local config everytime it restarts.

Can I use the syrotech device just like a dumb ONT by disabling WLAN and other router settings?
Was planning to bridge it with a decent gigabit router (considering TP-Link archer c1200).
Is anyone else using the router? How is the compatibility and performance and is it easy to bridge it with the syrotech ONT? Any specific settings that need to be implemented?

You can go for Archer c6 with your eyes closed.
Many in the forum have a similar setup and have no issues with it.
Your connection may have mac or serial number binding which can easily spoofed.

Hi @gizmosaurabh , like you I got MTNL FTTH installed a few weeks back. Initially I had 100 mbps Connection but few days back I upgraded to 500 mbps since price difference was less < 500Rs and I was getting better speeds.

Now for choosing a Wifi router since ISP provided router is pathetic. I would suggest you to invest keeping long term in mind. My suggestion is you go for C7 or A9, since you might want to upgrade speed in future. AC1200 has gotten old...A9 is relatively new and C7 is still one of the most popular router.

And yes you can connect the two routers together and get good internet. Will suggest you to disable wifi on the ISP router. You can use your wifi router as access point ( connect to Lan of TP-Link)or in Dynamic IP mode(connect to Wan port) both.

In case you manage to bridge the ISP router that's even better and you can use PPPoe on TPlink.

Hi Vignesh and Spaceboy13. Thanks a lot for your inputs. I was considering the C6, C7 and A9 but the problem is that C6 is unavailable and C7 and A9 are taking 2-3 weeks to ship hence thought of going for the ac1200. Will get one among these as per availability. Thanks for the info about the AC1200 being old. Just noticed that it was launched in 2015.
