Help In Configuring My BSNL FTTH With Syrotech ONT

@Kick933

1. I asked them, they just come up with same old reply contact higher officials and they gave me the customer care number.
2. Older ONT is taken on rent, so I thought I would buy one and return the old.

So just to clear things, there's two levels of whitelisting or filtering which can apply.

1. At the OLT level, the OLT can be configured to allow only specific whitelisted ONT devices to register with the OLT. This is to prevent any rogue ONT from registering with the OLT. The OLT here can use multiple parameters to allow the ONT to register, it could be the serial number, LOID or even a username+password.

2. Mac binding at the PPPoE layer. The authentication is allowed only from whitelisted ethernet mac address. This is like a second layer of authentication in addition to the user+password.

Now in this case, it appears to be the first one. Some ONTs allow you to clone these auth parameters, like change the serial or LOID or even the username and password (this is a separate username and password used to auth with the OLT)
Unfortunately, the ONT UI shown in the screenshots, doesn't appear to support modifying these parameters. Please navigate to the different pages on the management UI and see if you have an option to change serial or LOID or username+password. Note that this is different from the WAN profiles.

The ZTE based ONTs like the ones without telephone port from Syrotech do support changing these parameters.

For example this is from my Huawei which allows changing the serial and password.

Visited the BSNL Office today,

They told Syrotech will not work, only "authorised ONTs" would work. I asked if they are doing mac binding, they told only vlan binding is in place. Further, they added the so-called authorized ONTs will have compatibility issue, so it will not work. It seems they have a problem me switching the ONT. And they started talking about security issues with the thirdparty ONTs.

Yeah, the same company that sets "password" as the password for the PPPoE credentials talk about security issue.

@varkey Seems have to return the Syrotech ONT 😕

@AshikAliLive Whitelisting a 3rd party ONT is probably not something they are willing to do, it's entirely upto them though.
Also, it is not necessarily bound based on mac address, they'd use the serial and other parameters that I had mentioned in the previous post.

Either way, even if you could clone the details on a new ONT, when you return the old ONT, they might de-provision or even give the same ONT to another customer which would create a conflict.

If you really want to stop paying the rental, perhaps get a Huawei ONT itself, which they cannot deny as not compatible, cause they probably have an Huawei OLT as well.

Also, I'd avoid using the terms "mac resetting" or "mac binding" for this cause they might confuse it with PPPoE based mac binding plus it's not really mac based. Perhaps just mention to whitelist or allow the new ONT to register with the OLT.

I think for new bsnl ftth connections , they are not using MAC binding. To prove this , yesterday evening I kept Netlink ONU to bridge mode ( VoIP profile in router mode) and used one old TP-Link router with PPOE authentication. It worked with no issues. VoIP will be enabled only when the PPOE authentication is success at TP-Link.

Kept running this setup for few minutes and changed back to the original , that too worked with no issues.

screen shot from selfcare portal shows the MAC change. This made me to believe that only username and VLAN authentication is in place.
