For clarity, your previous response made me think if there were resolvers in AS9829 doing recursion for everyone on the Internet!

From a reachability perspective, I am assuming you are implying icmp(?), from AS24186, except for 218.248.112.225, 218.248.114.65 and 61.1.1.1, all (61.x/218.x) IP addresses are reachable.

@swapneelp 218.x.x.x was an open resolver until recently where it could be reached and resolve queries even outside BSNL's network but things seems to have changed.

@philip exactly why I was questioning @shankartalala. The "believe" that it is faster. If we go by numbers the fastest response I got from was 218.248.112.225 which is 8 ms. The new 61.1.1.1 gives me 20 ms at best. And google dns is 48 ms right now. 1.1.1.1 is crazy right now with 1382 ms and above, but it will come down to under 60 ms by evening or later and it has been doing this for the past few days. Of course things are location and routing based so what's good for me might not be good for you at all. Making a statement without a reason just irks me.

@sloj Are you referring to just the latency to those endpoints? You'd need to take into consideration the time taken for that resolver to return a response. Try checking with the dig utility.

With BSNL resolvers I've noticed that for any query which isn't already cached, it takes a significantly longer time to respond. Whereas with Google DNS it's much faster.

1.1.1.1 dns resolves queries much faster even compared to google dns.
But Google dns had the lowest latency for me so, even if Google dns resolves queries little bit slower, it is comparatively faster than the others when latency is taken into account.

Cloudfare doesn't have any servers nearer ,even if they have ,all the routes are transferred directly to their Mumbai server,that's why u are getting added latency ,in case of google dns,it has much more deeper integration and have servers everywhere .that's why it has less latency than cloudfare. ISP dns will be faster than them,but as @varkey mentioned some of the address are not cached hence u will have greater site loading times, which google dns does not have. Also some of the sites blocked by isps can be bypassed if we use Google dns ...

Both Google and isps dns gives me almost similar latency ,in case of cloudfare there will be an added 25 ms. Of course the individual performances still varies upon routing and all, so we cannot have any generalized notion here about which is the best dns overall
