Hathway asking 15k for a direct connection

Hello all. I have been using this god awful, horrible, and atrocious Siti/Indinet (more like S*ITTY) broadband for 5 years now at this point. When I first got the connection, I wanted to opt for something like Airtel or Alliance broadband as I heard from my friends that they are pretty good. Airtel straight up denied and Alliance LCO redirected me towards the Indinet LCO. I simply got a cat5e cable to my house from a switch hung up on a pole by a road near my house (it's still the same). Nothing else...

My Experience With Indinet:

Now packet loss, downtime for days, bad routing, request timed outs (both from LCO and the ISP side), in-game packet loss, and more got me pretty fed up. Netflix doesn't go to 4k, Prime video doesn't hit the highest resolution available and stay there, Hotstar keeps buffering... I am just done with this BS. The LCO is also extremely rude, always says it's my router's or PC's fault when the problem is in his end (I have an Archer C9, so should be a decent enough router), and has done many more bad things. We paid for a Siti cable set-top box while installation, and when we switched to DTH, he simply came to our house and took the box (that WE paid for) and went away. No one said anything.

He used to take 35 rupees higher than what he actually recharged for the plan including GST and warned us against doing online recharge (their portal is bad enough anyways). So how did I figure it out? I don't know how, but one day, on the play store, I stumbled upon the My Indinet app (pretty astonishing stuff). So I logged in using my mobile number and OTP. On the invoice section, I could see all of my invoices and my neighbors invoices for whatever weird reason (seems like a massive breach of privacy but whatever I'm getting offtopic). There I saw what was the actual amount he recharged for every month including GST. When asked for it, my LCO replied it's taxes. He stopped replying when I reverted that those recharges were including the taxes. But whatever 35 rupees right? No big deal so my parents kept on paying him that. He kept up the malpractice for couple more months until I sent Indinet a long email with screenshots of my actual my Indinet app receipts and LCO given receipts. Even then, forget a refund, a rude employee called me from Indinet and said, "It's a common thing within operators. They take this for a 24x7 service. Stop crying like a lil bitc* (they used some Bengali swear words and this is the best translation I can provide). And a 24x7 service my as*, I didn't even get internet 15 days out of the 30 days I pay for.

They shut down their services as soon as they see some clouds on the horizon. And all the users here in Kolkata would know about the thunderstorm around evening most days in this season. And once the internet goes down, it ain't coming back till next day noon. And I had a static IP at first. When I didn't need it anymore, I decided to stop paying the 3000 od rupees I pay every year for it, thinking my nat type would at least stay on Moderate, enabling me to play online multiplayer games on consoles. But NOPE, Xbox and PC jumps between Teredo unable to qualify and Strict and server connectivity blocked (with high latency and packet loss), nat type 3 on PS4, and D on my Switch. I can't even join any Minecraft server on PC. CSGO, Fortnite have become unplayable because of the packet loss. Rainbow six siege, division 1, and 2, pubg lite, COD, Battlefield IV, and V, Battlefront II damn near every multiplayer games I have played regularly on PC, I have faced problems. Forget about console games as they won't even connect...

Me and my friend used Parsec and when I had a static IP, it used to work perfectly fine. Then my friend moved and got S*itty broadband (previously he was on Alliance). And around the same time, my static IP package finished. And we couldn't normally connect to each other on parsec. We started using Zerotier and that worked for a while. Then my friend had to move again and got back to Alliance broadband. Since he switched to Alliance, the latency has always been above 500ms (unusable) on Zerotier for some reason, and without Zerotier it doesn't even connect. I know that it's a Siti broadband's problem because my other friends from other ISPs (Airtel XStream fiber, Jiofiber) also got the same thing trying to connect to me.

I switched to an over 100mbps package a couple of years ago. I didn't get the full speed because of the 100 Mbps switch used by the operator. When the operator recharged, he didn't tell me that I wouldn't get the speed because of that. I had to pay 3000 rupees extra to the operator for a gigabit switch to get over 100 Mbps (Yes I had to pay during the first installation and multiple wire changes as well). For that, he promised me once he lays OFC (which he said was gonna happen soon), I won't have to pay for that. Two years later, still waiting for fiber...

When I seriously started working online, I requested other ISPs countless times. But no one would enter my area. I called Airtel once again to request an Xstream fiber connection. Their backend team called me and told me that they once had their connection available in my area. But other LCOs and cable mafia drove them out. And mostly they didn't put up a fight because of a low number of users in my area. When I begged them for a connection and told them that I am ready to pay the cost of the cable (I thought the distance would be about 1KM, but it was much higher than that), they just laughed and told me that if I am ready to pay around 500000 rupees (including wire and manpower), I can get a connection.....

At this point, you guys might be thinking why didn't I got to the district consumer court against my LCO and Siti... Believe me, I really wanted to. Well, my parents didn't care before as they didn't use the internet at all. Then when we stopped DTH as well and all of their content became internet-based, they started getting mad as well at the downtimes, and the quality drops (no kidding the quality would drop below 480p on Netflix, Hotstar, and prime video sometimes). I found out about the central government PG (public grievance) portal a couple of days ago on this forum. I have lodged a complaint there... Let's see what happens...

TLDR: NEVER EVER GO FOR SITI OR INDINET.

I called up the Alliance LCO once again and he basically told me this: They got multiple requests ('leads') from our area and forwarded them to Alliance. They got permission to lay wires from the corporation. But my LCO stopped them. They apparently have this "mutual agreement" that one LCO doesn't enter other's area. When I said that this should be illegal, and one broadband company can not have a monopoly over one area, the Alliance operator told me that it IS illegal. But no one cares. Not even TRAI or the DOT. Then he said, "Suppose you pay me 20k for the connection including wires and all. Now to go to your area, the fiber cable has to go through two different LCO's areas. Now if one of the LCO cuts the wire, you would have to pay that 20K again. How many times are you gonna keep paying that? It's just not sustainable. And I don't really wanna tussle with your Indinet LCO and his goons." Then he gave me the number of a nearby H Fiber LCO.

Now I called them and visited their office back last year. I saw that the same LCO provides Hathway, Alliance, and H Fiber all together which seemed pretty weird. At first, they denied, then they agreed to look into it. Later, he said that if I need a new connection, I can only go for H Fiber. And he would give me a direct connection. He's gonna use two gigabit Fiber MCs (media converter), one on my end, and one on his, and run OFC in between (about 1km). And he said the whole setup would cost me around 15k. Should I go for it? And I got the confirmation from him that even if my current Indinet LCO cuts or breaks the wire, he would handle it. Not me. He seemed like somewhat of a better person than my current LCO, I don't really know...

Then he just stopped receiving my calls and I just gave up... Because of 5 days of constant downtime and no one coming to fix anything, I started spam calling him again a couple of days ago. He finally picked up and told me that he can give me the connection as soon as the lockdown would be over by 20th May (if the lockdown gets lifted on 17th, which I don't think it will but whatever). I asked him if it's possible to give me the connection within the lockdown as broadband service should be an essential service. Apparently some of his men went to jail for providing a new connection and they got a notice stating that they can do maintenance on their existing lines but they can not provide new connections. I don't know if that's true or not, he assured me that I will get the connection. Is there any downside to using media converters? Also, if there's any H Fiber Kolkata user here, please tell me about your experience with H Fiber. Do you get at least moderate nat? What are the downtimes like? I am especially scared because I saw in this forum that they started using Jio gateway. Now, I don't really care about blocked websites as I have Nord for that. Is there any other downsides to that?

PS
Sorry guys about the long rant and the horrible formatting.

@debanjan757 ah, finally found a really good article about the s*itty SiTi cable. Your post made my day.

I've used Meghbala (or PMPL) for 2 Years, SiTi for another 2 and now I'm using H-Fiber since August 2018. I'll recommend you to read my detailed review of H-Fiber before opting for the connection. Link here: Hathway's H-Fiber broadband and how it's better than most of the ISPs out there..... | Hathway Broadband H Fiber FTTH

I am willing to perform whatever tests or quality checks you may require to understand the current connection quality of H-Fiber.

BTW AFAIK,Media converter is just a device which will act like a extender.
Then,he can take ofc to other people.
Believe me,I am very sure that if it is media converter, then if you switch it off,the people after you will loose their connection.
But,it is costly, why did not he simply use ONT at your place as 20 km and even more distance can be served.

Maybe because for utilizing the ONT method, he'll probably need an OLT too, which costs like 30K or more. I'm not sure about this though.
Since this is just a dedicated connection, between the remote ISP and the user @debanjan757, that's why he opted for a media converter, which costs like Rs. 1000/- per unit (cheap ones).

@sumantrab99
Sorry, but i do not understand why would he use Media Converter when you are given one dedicated connection. It would be better to get a good quality wireless point to point CPE for both places. It would work great upto 5KM and ping would increase negligible.
I suggest the OP to think about using WIRELESS TRANSMISSION instead of using fibre if he face such a issue.it would be way economical.Just fix it hard....it usually work even in rain for a distance of 1km without negligible performance dip.
BTW,Media converter should not be purchased new.I suggest going with used ones. You can easily find them nearby if you live in Kolkata.
Choice is yours.
He is using Media Convertor because he do not want to irk the LCO and his Goons....I mean that the LCO will not care for one connection until an OLT is used which makes him suspicious of attack on his customer base.(Just a guess)
Ok,If 15k is not more for you,get it.
I do not know anything about the quality of service but i still suggest wireless until you need fiber absolutely.
PS: Do not worry about Ping,If distance is around 2KM,the ping would be affected negligibly.

As far as my little knowledge regarding setting up wireless P2P link goes, I think setting up this kind of network has its own downsides associated with it, like for best network performance, there shouldn't be anything obstructing between the line of sight, which frequency to use and how much noise it has, choosing the perfect CPE in terms of frequency & range, etc.

Yes, I agree that its costly. Setting up two nodes using OFC is costly. And that's why the LCO is asking for the price of the OFC too. He's basically making you buy the all the devices and equipment required. Using Wireless P2P will cost less, and it doesn't come with the problem of another LCO cutting the fiber. But I'm not sure about the latency and the maximum throughput one will get. It all comes down to the site of LCO, the client site & the number of buildings in-between.

Another thing that occurred to me is that, since H-Fiber is a pure fiber based network, if there's wireless involved, will they accept complaints regarding latency, ping, packet drops, etc. ? I mean even for me, whenever I lodge a complaint regarding network performance, the tell me to connect my system directly to the ONT, using a Cat-5e/6 cable only. They never accept any complaint if there's Wi-Fi or routers involved in the network.

I've noticed this among all the ISPs that I've had an encounter with throughout my life - they always look for an excuse, and it generally goes like this: "Sir, you are using Wi-Fi", "There's something wrong with your router", "Maybe the server from which you're downloading is congested", blah blah blah. I've even heard on multiple occasions that Google's own servers are the reason behind piss-poor download speeds on anything Google related.

Bottom line is this: Before buying a connection, ask nearby users, lookup on the Internet and use this forum to know well in advance about the pros and cons of any ISP.

Yeah, I actually read your review last year and replied to that thread. Your review was some of the only things I could find about H Fiber as soon as I heard about it and looked it up. I thought about sending you a PM about it, but I dunno how to PM here. Later I saw your Hathway using Jio gateway post and got kinda scared. Do you get at least moderate NAT? Do you get any in-game or Discord packet loss? How has your experience been with H Fiber during this lockdown? Do they cut the connection during rain or storm?

Wow, that sounds pretty great. I mean, I don't really care about a couple ms higher ping as long as there's no packet loss or something like that if that's a cheaper option. I will ask the H Fiber LCO.

I get a dynamic public IPv4 with all ports open. But external ICMP requests are blocked, which means no Hurricane Electric IPv6 tunnelling, if you're into that.

I don't play a lot of games, so can't really help you with that. The last time I played something, it was pubg lite for desktop. I remember getting a ping of 50ms - 60ms. Atleast that's what it was showing on the bottom right corner of the screen, during gameplay.

My lockdown experience was atleast better than that of my friends, when it comes to internet performance. During the early days of lockdown (March end to beginning of April), there was some congestion, which obviously led to lower speeds, but nothing noticable, unless you perform a speedtest. There was no packet loss at any stage. My 100mbps speeds became 60mbps, but only during lockdown peak hours (10am to 10pm). Then it would gradually increase back to normal after midnight. Then again the same thing next day. I complained about this to hfiber, and they acknowledged that it was indeed a network congestion. They assured me that they'll increase their upstream capacity or something like that.

A week later, the congestion issue suddenly disappeared. I tried to contact them, but their office was totally closed due to lockdown.

But atleast I didn't face any serious issue. Most of my friends are on alliance, and they all faced the same issue of network congestion during the first few weeks of lockdown. But the most bitter experience that one of my friend had was with SiTi. They intentionally throttled everyone's account down to 20/30 mbps, to prevent congestion. Atleast that's what his LCO told him. Sucks to be a SiTi user.

No, they don't turn off anything during thunderstorms or rain. Its a pure FTTx network, and hence has got nothing to do with thunderstorms. However, you'll lose connectivity if there's a fiber-cut in some area. This rarely happens.

About the pm thing, I'm also not sure how a user can connect with another on this forum. Maybe there's some other way of communicating with each other.

Yep. I pay 1700 rupees for the 160 Mbps plan. I am currently getting the same speed you mentioned with the usual packet loss and connection cut every couple hours. Hopefully atleast some sort of relaxation would be given on the lockdown on 17th so they can provide me the connection. Atleast hopefully will be able to join minecraft servers from then...

@debanjan757 to cut the cost you can at least arrange the Optical Fiber by yourself, you can find some info about that here (courtesy @Kick933 )

@sumantrab99
I don't play a lot of games, so can't really help you with that.
If you've windows 10, just go to Settings > Gaming > Xbox Networking > you'll find the NAT type for Xbox Server (if it shows "Teredo is unable to qualify" then just click "Check Again")

NAT Type: Moderate

Okay so here's the thing. Like I said before, I don't do much gaming anymore. So this whole X-Box NAT thing is new to me. I know what NAT is, and I know this for a fact that all the ports are open in H-Fiber. My previous screenshot shows that the NAT type is moderate, which shouldn't be the case, considering open ports.

But then again, why wouldn't it show moderate NAT type? One quick search on Google revealed that open NAT type requires opening up some ports via Firewall, or utilizing the easy yet vulnerable UPnP option. This is something that I didn't do.

So, I quickly logged in to my OpenWRT router, enabled UPnP and voilà!

Here's how it looks like from the router's UPnP panel:

So, there you go. You get fully open NAT type on Xbox networking.

I'm more than happy to perform any more tests if required.

That's epic. Thanks man. And another good thing is that one of my friends who plays csgo (in Pune) has Hathway and he usually gets 5ms ping in csgo. I also have UPnP enabled on my Archer C9. Still get Strict or Teredo unable to qualify because of this shitty broadband. Hopefully once I get H Fiber, I will also get open NAT. You get this without paying for a static IP or something like that right? And can you share a current trace route result? Because on your last thread about H Fiber starting to use Jio backend, I heard that the routing has gone to shit. I shared your trace route results from that thread to my friend and he also said that it's pretty bad and there are too many hops. But I also saw somewhere that it has improved in the last few months. Is telegram web blocked? Can you access blocked websites using cloudflare or Google DNS?
