21 years back, I got my first job.
And Mamta Banerjee was part of NDA.

Yes to the 'progress since 1990's' argument. Mms and ra
Atal Bihari Vajpayee passed the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2003 which is the backbone of NPR/NRC and CAA too. He is the reason we are fucked now. Even after this pandemic gets over.

You missed a few points.

1. Governments from 47 till recently did not solve the India Bangladesh enclaves problem. A few thousand non contiguous enclaves. Which resulted in a porous border. Till recently.

2. The Assam accords established an NRC under guidance of supreme court. For government of India's side, it was signed by Rajiv Gandhi 🙂

*Credit to mms and rao for ending license raj...

The problem of illegal immigrants could have been resolved using existing laws and regulations which are sufficient. In fact, India has done that even before the NRC. And NRC was supposed to tackle only the Assam issue. The rest of the nation doesn't have the same problem which the current govt is trying to get rid of(Muslims). And the way it got implemented in Assam is inhumane. People are in detention centers for years now. There is no extradition treaty to release them back. And of those who have lived here since eternity, deporting them is just a human right violation.

2003 amendment didn't help either by adding unreasonable clauses like marking a person as doubtful and the legal recourse to contest your citizenship is difficult and opaque.

Gents and ladies (if there are lady members), can we PLEASE, PLEASE NOT discuss politics and religion, directly or indirectly, on this forum. 🙏 It degenerates into unpleasantness and acrimony sooner or later.

If you had said this before 2014, it would make sense. But given the current climate, you cannot just be apolitical anymore. Being ignorant is bliss no more.

Nobody is saying you ought to be ignorant or act like an ostrich. The world is a different place today. But the reason for my suggestion is because political and religious choices are personal we all have our likes/dislikes and 'n' # of reasons to justify them. And the divisions and chasms can get deep. It's happening across the world.

However, these discussions have vitiated many an environment in the past, present and will continue to do so in the future. I know lifelong friends who stopped talking to each other, family members too. Therefore I feel its best left out in order to maintain the friendly collaborative nature of this forum.

Wait for Humlog, Buniyaad, Malgudi Days, Yeh Jo hain zindagi, Flop show, Dekh bhai dekh, etc to be back too. If lockdown is extended!
