Hello Guys,
I happened upon this forum by luck and it seems like you guys know your shit.😀
I made this account cause i thought you guys could help me out with my issue.
I recently upgraded my FTTH connection from 5GB plan (Daily FUP) to 500 GB CUL plan - 50Mbps (Combo 777). But there's something off about the whole thing. Speed tests sometimes show that i have 40+ Mbps download & upload speed. But most times speed falls below 20 Mbps.
The problem is when it comes to file downloads i rarely get over 1 MB/s in Telegram. Same speed for torrent downloads, and around 4-5 MB/s when I download something from Play store. I should be getting 4-5 MB/s for torrents and other direct downloads, right ? And a friend who has the same plan told me he gets a minimum of 10 MB/s in play store.

I used to get a minimum of 1 MB/s with my old plan(Which offered 10Mbps upto 5 GB/day). With this new plan, even that speed cannot be taken for granted🙁.

So could i solve this issue by tinkering around with my ONT modem and router ? Tried Customer care, but they weren't helpful.
My router is Tenda N301.
ONT Modem - AONT 100C Alphion

Oh and I am from Pala, Kottayam. I am a novice at all this. So you guys will probably have to walk me through the whole process , if you are willing to help. All i know is to login to my Router and Modem. Thank you in advance 🙂

P.S : Attached speed tests were taken maybe 2-3 minutes apart.

May be the issues due to recent botnet malware attack still not resolved in your area. When you got the connection and is this slow speed issue comes from starting?

Their network is overcongested at these peak hours and also due to COVID and all internet traffic has been increased and BSNL is not able to handle that much capacity, since they didnt invested in backhaul upgradation like buying transit etc for years.I think we can do anything about it. Many are facing issues altough speeds will be normal by morning. Please do a speedtest at non peak hours and if the issue persists then there may be a problem with your connection

Thank you for the replies. The slow speed issue was there from the beginning. I got the message that the plan was changed on 17/3/20. Speed tests has shown me download and upload speed above 40Mbps at times. . But even when i try to download then, the speed is limited to the limits i have written in the original post.

Also IPV6 connectivity shows No internet access. Would that have anything to do with my problems ?

@Mr. K Put your ONT in bridge mode. Use your router to establish PPPoE.

IPv6 is not enabled nationwide. It's okay.

I logged into my ONT. But the internet connection type only shows PPPoE, DHCP and Static IP. 🙁
It is set in PPPoE.

I see that you have an Alphion ONT, unsure how that can be set in bridge mode. Eitherway, are your speeds over WiFi or wired? Try if you are getting better speeds when connected over wired ethernet.

Check if you are getting good speeds at night. Try these links

As others posted BSNL Kerala (possibly other areas as well) is in a bad state right now. During the day the speeds are pathetic. Local endpoints like the one you tested against would show relatively higher speeds, but file downloads may be slow.

On my Airtel gigabit over Wifi I was able to download nearly 1 GB in about a minute. For SGP.

I will also test with CloudFare Warp+. With CF WP+ I was able to download 1.1 GB or so in about a minute.

Speed to BLR without CF WP+ is like 20% faster than to SGP.

Over Wired (speed tests show above 50Mbps both download and upload)

For the first link Around 7 minutes to download 1 GB
For the 2nd link - 3.5 minutes to download 1 GB ( This is the speed i should get, right ?)

Over WiFi (Speed tests show around 40mbps)

For 1st link - Around 3.5 minutes to download just 150 MB 🙁 (Maxed out at 700kb/s)
For 2nd link - Around 3.5 minutes to download 350 MB (Maxed out at 1.5-1.7 Mb/s)

Alright. So I'm guessing my Router is shit at its job 😒.
But why does the speed tests show above35 Mbps over wifi ? I should be getting decent download speed then right ? Are speed tests not reliable ?
