Even if you have 1Tbps bandwith, if the route is not optimised then you would have higher latency. Because data physically travels via a longer path which increases its time to reach the destination ( It's called as Latency, I'm saying this so that your smart brain can understand that.)
We're not crazy about routing, having adequate bandwidth only improves the transfer speeds.

Yes, I forgot to mention about latency. Naturally, that's more important than bandwidth. Too lazy to elaborate further. But I agree with you on latency and distance, let's not forget signal loss.
