Hello Community, new member here...pardon this long post as I got a lot to say on remarkable BSNL FTTH

I have this Multilink Revo ONU which looks exactly like the Netlink both from outside and the interface. Got it's firmware upgrade done. But recently saw several ads being injected into the sites with http, one in form of a new window and another as these sliding messages appearing on the top right corner of the window, when ran the web inspector on firefox saw the source of these ads as inpagepush.com and netpatas.com, anyone else experiencing this ?

Before this whole malware attack thing there was a constant issue of very high pings and slow speeds with my ftth connection, which used to reach upto 1000ms at times, and it usually occurred at a fixed time of the day. On further probing through tracert, MTR one of the core NOC servers was found to be the culprit in this. And it took BSNL over 6months to address this. That too it was resolved by their IT cell and the core NOC after speaking with a lot many PGMs GMs CGMs, the guys in my district have not even bothered to contact me till now, despite a pending complaint on the PGportal 😛, talk of customer service.

and when that got fixed a new issue popped up...😑

the latest issue is one of VOIP getting dropped from time to time, where the status shows as registering and the light goes off on the ONT, then after sometime it comes back again, anyone else facing this issue ?

@varkey @pothi I tried using the ONT in bridge mode, but it doesn't seem to be working for me...I connected the ethernet cable from the port1 of ONT to the WAN port of the router, fired up the PPPoE and went along, firstly the internet connection took a lot of time to get established initially and the internet light on my TP-Link to turn on, but then it dropped after a while. Also, when I power off and power on the router it fails to establish the internet connection back on....any suggestions ?

I feel this whole FTTH service is very poorly managed by the BSNL as most of the time their pvt partners do not have a clue of what's going and the necessary authority to do anything...and as a result the blamegame keeps going on b/w the pvt partner and the JTO with customer at the suffering end.
As i say...as long as BSNL works, it works like a charm...but when it blows a fuse, that is when your worst nightmare starts!

@harshvkrm welcome to the forum.

Malware / ad issue on http sites is a known issue. It has been discussed multiple times in the past here. We have no control over it. It is part of what we get from BSNL FTTH as a package. Some ISPs provide us free router. Some provide free telephone instrument. BSNL provides free malware/ad on http sites.

Bridge mode... I'd recommend not to try it at this difficult time. The entire BSNL network is choking due to increased usage. When something doesn't work, we don't know if it is due to ONU or BSNL.

Only rarely, LCOs can go wrong. They simply provide the last mile connectivity. They are responsible for cable cuts too. Everything else is controlled by BSNL.

@pothi I'm not trying anything in these already challenging times...that observation of mine was from 2months back when I did the whole thing after reading yours and varkey's posts
Although I did take up the adware matter with them and have sent them a screen recording of the issue. I wouldn't mind it so much but the ads are out of control now, often redirecting to inappropriate sites. and appearing as sliding messages on the original webpage😛 , checked it with other ISP networks and devices, and the issue is only when connected to BSNL. They told me that they will look into it but it may take sometime due to lockdown and all.

@eriek_halenx I am using the default BSNL DNS as of now, because even after changing the DNS in manual mode on the ONU the WAN status on status page still shows as the BSNL DNS. Also, not using any browser plugins.

Guys anyone planning to upgrade to any firmware , be cautious , if somethign goes wrong , there wont be anyone to help. If your modem is even half working , leave it alone for few days till we get a clear picture on who can come out and who cant.

If it aint broken .. PLEASE DONT TRY TO FIX IT

I understand @harshvkrm.
I agree with @naveen_reloaded 's comments above regarding bridge mode. But we can still try fix the malicious scripts and popups issue.

1. Increase your ont security just incase. You may refer BSNL FTTH Connection ONT vulnerabilities - Increase security | BSNL FTTH Bharat Fiber Broadband

2. You have an ont and a router. One of them assigns ip address dynamically to your devices. You would need to change the dns of that one. It will be under LAN section. I'm attaching a screenshot of lan dns option on both ont and router incase its helpful.

Change DNS from BSNL to quad9 (if you can ping it . Quad9 9.9.9.9 is supposed to filter malicious domains) or other like Google dns. You may verify it with something like What's My DNS Server?

bsnl personnel themselves had changed dns on my old ADSL connection 😅 Which doesn't actually inspire confidence in their DNS servers...

3. Install a plugin like adblock plus for your specific browser. This should help with popups from the same website / domain.

@eriek_halenx thank you so much for your helpful response but like @Dark_Nate even I have the same question, why the DHCP on both the devices ?

I'll just run you through what my setup is like...so to setup my router I had called up the TP-Link support and they asked me to change the IP address of the router to something in the range of the ONU's default IP range, like 192.168.1.x and asked me to disable the DHCP on the router.

Now, should I disable the DHCP on the ONU ? and enable it on the tplink router ? or enable it on both the devices ?

In the meantime I have blocked the suspicious domains through modifying the "hosts" file in the windows folder, so far its working good at least on my desktop, but the issue is there with other devices.

P.s. as I wrote this post and was going through the ONU interface after your suggestions I found an option under the security tab of blocking certain URLs. I have keyed in the respective URLs that I found to be causing the issue. So let's see how things go from here. Also hoping it won't cause an issue with the ONU considering it's el cheapo and will probably need some more processing power to filter out these URLs.

@harshvkrm Did you get bridge mode to work or not?

If yes, you can leave DHCP enabled on ONT because it'll only work for the extra LAN port(s) not the bound interface.

If not, then yes, disable DHCP on router to prevent Double NAT.

Welcome.

Yes, DHCP on any one device.

My router currently allocates DHCP to devices. My ont doesn't allocate DHCP properly and had to be restarted. It's also a bare bones "el-cheapo" one 😅 , also number of devices is about 30.

Dns together with a browser plugin seems the best solution imho. Yes host file / ont black listing should work. But the malicious websites can change their domain / also new one's can appear.

I am not trying the bridge mode stunt at home right now...for if anything blows Up in the onu, which I am sure will one day considering how it’s built, I will be marooned forever. The service here is so slow and poor that they take 6months time to fix it in normal days, I do not even want to know what will happen during a pandemic 😛

@eriek_halenx the thing with BSNL adware is that it’s domain is more consistent than BSNL’s network and service. So all the ads come from this common source, which will stay this way I guess for a month or so. As and when it changes I will be ready to block that as well. 😎
