Now that I am evaluating Kerala Vision broadband, thought I would create a thread to share my experience. My LCO provides broadband services from BSNL and Kerala Vision, so thought would be good to evaluate Kerala Vision as well.

Getting the account setup was pretty easy, cause there was no need for additional cabling or ONT etc. I shared a photo and ID/address proof doc to the LCO, and the same day evening he setup my account and shared the credentials. The LCO shares the same OLT for all services, so on my end, I just needed to configure my OpenWRT device appropriately.

Initially I didn't get the Kerala Vision VLAN, so I had to reach out to the LCO's tech guy who shared the id. I added the VLAN to the switch (my ONT is a transparent bridge, so I needed no change on the ONT) which created an interface and all I needed to do was add the necessary interface configuration with the PPPoE credentials.

As you can see, they use CG-NAT which is disappointing but other than BSNL and few others nobody else gives public IP addresses. Also I liked the fact that things just worked on first try 😆 (the above screenshot is from my first try to connect)

Will add more details as I explore more.

@vignesh_venkatesan : I don't know a lot about this. What if you suspend one session and resume another.

Also can multiple PPoE seesions be held over different VLAN.

WAN load balancers might help?

I am curious about this too

Depends on how the PPPoE server is configured, it simultaneous logins are allowed for a user account it would work. If not, auth would fail.

You can definitely have two different WAN connections over different VLANs. I did the same when I tried BSNL and KV from my LCO. Yes you'd need a device which supports that, I use an OpenWRT based router.

Just curious, from the business POV of LCO, how cant they furnish more connections to the consumers without that many splitters?

How many connections can GPON/EPON/GEPON can support?

@varkey : what about BSNL and KV, how are they configured? 😛..You could smuggle some data packets at night when everybody is sleeping 😛

@Gokul Kannan So what do you suggest? What is the reasonable thing that can be done in such a case?
I would suggest asking your LCO for the possibility of switching your connection to a different port on OLT if available or in case if not many splitters are used, LCO may need to check for bad splices or excessive bends on the fiber run which causes attenuation.

Update: KV has switched back to Airtel for almost all of their routing! Latency is ~5ms more than a pure Airtel connection that I tried from EKM. The only instance I found them using other sources to route their connections to the Middle East for which they use their private uplink at Extreme IX Mumbai. International speeds are also fully restored but some slight network congestion during peak hours is still present. If you can get a static IP with KV, it's actually a pretty decent connection but don't expect anything consistent.

Correction: Looks like they're using their Extreme IX uplink to utilize their bilateral peering with all the usual CDNs and services. Routing to google is done exclusively with the Power Grid Corp. So pretty much everything else is routed through Airtel.

LCO dont have EPON ONU for giving connection. I am from Trivandrum. Any other source /shop i can get one device to get connection?

Thanks @varkey , that's a relief. Sometimes I do get connectivity issues, specifically DNS server issues (connected, no internet) and I'm suspecting it's from the kv side as everytime I have this issue, I call up or raise a ticket and then it gets resolved with them calling me to check if it's working now. Had this issue 3 times in a day and it's pretty frustrating. On an unrelated/related note, which dns address do you think is best for kv? Google or cloudfare or isp alone? Isp seems to be faster than cloudflare but disappointed that i have to rely on isp for speed. I may have more questions if you don't mind.

Can anyone help me step by step on forwarding port on Netlink ONT device? I tried using the virtual server under NAT configuration with all the
required inputs but still the port won't open.
