I recently switched again ISP again from ANI Broadband to Tripleplay.

Context:-

ANI Broadband had been running very well for me with close to full speeds to international servers and good routing but recently they switched me (or rather the LCO) over to a different network which had many problems with reliability and speed. I was quite annoyed considering that ANI has worked well for me for close to 8 months. It seems to be an LCO specific issue as it is still good on other LCOs.

My LCO decided switch me over to another ISP (Precious Netcomm or PNPL) as ANI was having some reliability issues even on their side.

Unfortunately PNPL has its own share of issues, it works very well during morning (over 100Mbps to international servers) when there is little to no congestion but in evening it chugs (<5Mbps). So I was on the lookout for another ISP from another LCO.

@kanurag94 helped me out a lot in finding a new LCO (he lives in the same area as I). He told me about Tripleplay Broadband and gave me their number (Tripleplay doesn’t advertise much in my area; I wasn’t able to find any flyers with their number on it).

Setup/Installation:-

I messaged Tripleplay LCO and told them to set it all up on Sunday (9th Feb). The entire installation took 4 hours; I opted for fiber instead of copper, so setup took much longer. They came to my house at around 11AM and I had internet around 3PM. Installation cost was Rs. 2000. I had my own ONT so told them I didn’t want one. The termination box looks just like the one that ANI had.

Initially they didn’t set me up with Tripleplay, they made me an account with Zeonet. Zeonet had the same congestion problem as with PNPL except it was much worse (slowed down to mere 1Mbps at night). Here are the speedtests if anyone is interested:

@kanurag94 again helped me out and told me ask my LCO to switch me over to Tripleplay, I was worried that they won’t do it because I already paid for it. I messaged them again and they were willing to switch me over to Tripleplay.

The day after, they switched me over to Tripleplay with static IP.

Pricing:-

I’m paying Rs.1000 for 100Mbps. Its a much better deal compared to Rs.2500/month for ANI I have been paying for until now.

Public static ISP:-

In my ANI review I said that they were the only ISP in my neighbourhood who offered static IP but it turns out I was wrong. My LCO hooked me up with a public static IP right away. Its not 1:1 NAT like ANI either, I just have to put in my public IP directly on my router; pretty neat.

Speeds are very good even better than ANI. At 6-7AM I’m able to hit close to 120Mbps even on international servers. The tests above were done at around 9:30PM.

Traceroutes were done using MTR on a wired connection. Tripleplay uses Airtel backbone and Jio Backbone for transit in my area.
Tripleplay has proper hostnames for everything which is neat.
TriplePlay used to have Airtel advantage of 4ms pings to CloudFlare but unfortunately now they have went for Jio for domestic transit, pings are now 30ms. Not as bad as TATA with 70-80ms pings though 😛

Steam:-

I’m able to hit 12MB/s on Steam almost instantaneously. Pretty good stuff:-

poop.png

SABnzbd:-

For all who use usenet from home, I’m able to hit 11-12MB/s with Newsdemon/Eweka with 30+20 connections.

poop2.png

I haven't gotten around to testing torrents or throttling yet. I did test Ubuntu iso torrent and it was downloading fine, I will update this when I try out torrents further.

Reliablity:-

I have only been with them for 2 days so I can’t say much about reliability but it has had zero downtime till now atleast. I’m on fiber so hopefully it stays this way.
It has no packet-loss and unlike ANI there is no issue with routing to Cloudflare (Airtel peers with them as mentioned earlier).
As mentioned in my ANI Review, I don't play multiplayer games much but Minecraft EU Servers are working very well without players jumping all over the map.

Edit: Pings have improved recently. Around 10-20ms less on most international servers.

DNS:-

Tripleplay doesn’t hijack DNS unlike many ISPs like Excitel.
Edit: I'm on their static IP though, on Carrier Grade NAT I'm not sure if they do DNS Hijacking

Censorship:-

Most of the sites work well over HTTPS. 1337х, LimeTоrrents, RuТracker, Pоrnhub all work fine. The only website that doesn’t seem to work even on HTTPS is rаrbg.to which for some reason returns “PR_CONNECT_RESET_ERROR”. Not sure why rest are working but this one specifically doesn’t. This is likely Airtel’s fault though rather than Tripleplay.

Edit 12-03-2020: Tripleplay as it uses Airtel backbone, has blocking even on https now using TCP Reset attack. Most adult and piracy sites don't load at all like leetx, limetorents, pronhub etc. When I was originally writing this review I said Tripleplay didn't have site blocking not realising that I had DPI Circumvention software Zapret bol-van/zapret enabled on my computer which was unblocking sites.
Edit 2: TriplePlay also uses Jio Backbone now which also blocks https.

Support:-

Support will vary a lot by LCO but my LCO has been very good with me. Responding to my queries quickly; I didn’t have to contact them yet for downtime though.

Conclusion:-

Tripleplay is a very good ISP and the best of the ones I have tried until now. Hopefully it doesn’t go bad like ANI did for me.

Pros (imma just copy paste this from ANI because its pretty much the same):

1. Good international download speeds
2. Very good reliability with minimal downtime and zero packet loss
3. Good experience with support
4. Public Static IP without 1:1 NAT in between
5. No DNS Hijacking

Cons:

1. https site blocking due to Airtel/Jio backbone

I can’t think of anything else and unlike ANI Its 1k/month rather than 2.5k/month so I can’t complain about pricing. I would love IPv6 support though.

Does the Rs 1000 cost includes the static ip? What are the cost of other plans if you know (cause i guess the ones on the website are outdated).

Above speed tests are with "Single" or "Multi" connection?
I have also been using Triple Play for more than 2years..... mostly stable..... but test with "Single" connection, does not give full speed.

@ijsa Here are the single connection speeds. Speeds seem to drop off significantly with distance. Not sure if its just a 'natural' drop or due to the ISP.

@achaudhary997 I'm actually not sure about that LCO has been kinda weird about it, I have only paid 1000 for the internet but LCO told me that Tripleplay is asking him 250 extra monthly for static IP; so I asked him for UPI for extra payment. He hasn't replied yet and hasn't nagged me about that extra payment.

I'll call him up today and confirm if I actually have to pay the extra. Not sure if Tripleplay is actually asking him for money or he just wants it for himself.

Not sure if its an Airtel or Tripleplay problem (likely Airtel) but all the transit traffic is going through NTT Singapore for some reason accompanied by high latency and packet loss.

Trace complete.

Same here as well. Im using local isp who has a franchise of Maha Mediacom LLP (AS134042).

Whereas on Bsnl BB its going through nyiix.

My issue was fixed very quickly (surprisingly). I think someone at Airtel was testing something and it messed it up lol .

Your ISP is using Sify for transit it looks like (7th Hop 1.7.140.225) whereas BSNL uses TATA and Airtel. Airtel is on NYIIX while Sify isn't. Not sure why they are routing through PCCW :/

Optical Module Input Power(dBm)-33.0
Optical Module Output Power(dBm)1.8
Optical Module Supply Voltage(uV)3362000
Optical Transmitter Bias Current(uA)11750
Operating Temperature of the Optical Module(°C)28

For some reason Optical Power has been insanely high low. I don't even know how the ONT has managed to not drop the connection for over a day. Speeds and stuff are all still fine. I have contacted the LCO and told them to send someone over on weekend. Lets see what happens, usually LCOs are good with fixing stuff at physical/link layer.

The weird thing is Optical Power goes up to -26dBm at night time even though I haven't messed with anything in my home. Not sure why its doing that.
