All going to Pmcares fund I believe...

Toh karein kya. CT is the only way to know how severe is infection.

If you wait till your oxygen starts to drop it is already too late. Mild cases can become severe quickly.

Then RT pcr is not 100 percent accurate.

All doctors have their own theory.
Chest X-ray should be done before CT Scan, if the infiltrates are visible in an X-ray then the CT Scan is redundant since treatment will have to be started regardless

Can X-ray provide clear indication about the severity of infection? like you get a CT score in ct scan? or will it just show you are likely to be covid positive?

Treatment will be different based upon the infection.

X ray shows with less sensitivity and specificity than a CT. It’s a tradeoff but it’s always best to Diagnose based on clinical suspicion than with CT. During a pandemic, there will be scares every week whenever you catch a cold or a fever due to reasons other than COVID. You cant possibly rush to do a CT each time, can you? doctors prescribe a CT to mainly document and correlate symptoms with actual extent of lung damage.
For the public, it’s a Hype bubble, And an excellent way for diagnostic centres to make cash during this time.

Yes, CT Scan is always superior to X-ray but if you are a young healthy person with possible COVID and your SpO2 is also high then X-ray would be sufficient. If the X-ray does show significant issues then you can get a CT Scan to confirm the exact severity. If you are getting radiation equivalent to 500 X-rays then might as well get 501. I believe this is the point the AIIMS director was also alluding to.

If your RT pcr is positive and you want to know the extent of damage in lungs how else you can do that?

Obviously doing CT without any symptoms doesn't make sense. Public is going for CT either after the covid report or incase rtpcr is not available.

Xray then can only help if your rtpcr is negative and you want to confirm. But not useful if you are covid positive and want to know the extent of damage for medication.

Interesting Read.

True @Smh on all counts except what you said about people taking CT only after positive RTPCR. I see people going for CT just because they heard someone they know did it because they had covid and doctor ordered one.

I agree CT scan should be done only after a positive rtpcr/covid test.

If you have symptoms for few days and negative report or cannot get rtpcr done then xray - ct scan.

@manu1991 @pillaicha

Though AIIMS director should have clarified this. Don't do unnecessary testing, giving statement ct scan can cause cancer will just add to chaos.
