@varkey I imported a product from a website. They shipped from Canada and is using Aramex. After a week of fighting with Aramex (they were trying to categorise me as an individual, thereby making IEC invalid), they finally accepted my IEC and PAN, as a company rather than individual, about an hour ago and said that the documents are successfully verified. The status was "Shipment delivery pending identity proof by customer". Now it's been changed to "Customer ID received".

It's supposed to be cleared at Cochin customs.

Any idea on how much duty will be I charged?

Price: $44.90

Description?Product Type: Vinyl Covers, Phone Case

You can track the clearance process on Express Cargo Clearance System (ECCS), select Aramex and enter your Aramex tracking number. If the BOE is filed, the tentative duty amount will be reflecting there.

Phone Case etc, I think would have 28% or more duty, so you might not save much by going the IEC route as the standard duty for personal imports is 42.08%.

Where is the package right now? Usually Aramex gets the stuff cleared at Bangalore or Delhi from what I recall, is the package already in Kochi?

Yeah, so customs clearance would be at Delhi not Kochi. It's usually done af the first port of entry and for Aramex from my observation it's mostly at Bangalore or Delhi.

Looks like CBE is not filed, they'd probably file it later today or by tomorrow. Keep an eye on that portal as there wouldn't be any meaningful update in Aramex tracking until the shipment clears.

@varkey Thank you. 🙂 This will probably be a noob question, but is there any site or anything which shows the HSN code for every product and the duty applicable to them?

@agsbond I don't know if there's a better one out there but I use this. You can search either via product or HSN code. It lists all products that match the string so you might have to scroll down (or ctrl+f) a bit to find the correct one.

We still need to be seen as a free market economy with free flow of goods. Hence restricted to 77%.

I don't think we care about the world's opinion or trade anymore. If we can rank 142/180 in press freedom, 168/180 in the environmental index and 94/107 in the hunger index and get hundreds of people jobless by banning Tiktok/Shein etc, then we can definitely do better by raising the customs duty even further. Don't stop at 100%. Get it to 250% or something.

@varkey Now, ECCS is showing this:

Assessable Value716.94 (INR)
Total Custom Duty268.63 (INR)

So, the amount I should pay is the sum of these 2 values, or just the total custom duty?

@agsbond looks like the seller declared a lower value on the invoice 😅 You'd have to pay the total customs duty however that's the value as filed, if customs officers during the process changes the assessable value or the category this would vary. You'll need to wait till status says Exit Scanned to know the final value.

There will be another 300+tax as Aramex's handling charge as well.

@varkey Well, its just a phone case. Nobody will think twice about the value, I guess 😛 Good seller. I never asked him to declare it as low value or anything. 😀

Current StatusMARKED FOR PAYMENT
