I have now applied and purchased a modem from bsnl for the broad band connection under home 250.I was orally told by counter clerk of bsnl that even surfing of the websites will be taken into account while deciding about downloading/uploading limit of 400mb.As I am new to this sortof connection I do not know how it works.BSNL have not advised all the details in their website nor in the leading newspaper. Will some one advise and guide me though without downloading/uploading if I only surf thewebpages the downloaded webpages for reading while surfing these siteswill also be accounted for. Thanks

Opening yahoo.com is also counted as downloading... 😛 ...so yeah, surfing counts in your MB's.an advise ...go for the 500Home plan it will be much better or you'll end up paying huge chunks of bills

Hi padasalgi,Browsing heavy sites with lot of images, flash, sounds etc . 24 hours a day can exhaust your 400 mb is just 2-3 days....so better be cautions about your limit or BSNL wuld prove a really bad experience for you500home plan is always advisable if your use is not just checking mails...Sandy

Yup ... when you fire up your browser and key in a site, your browser has to DOWNLOAD the information ( image and text ) to be displayed on your browser from that site. There is no way the ISP can differentiate whether you are downloading or surfing, coz at the end of the day, it is just data.Ditto for email ...Requesting a webpage ( though hardly any bandwidth is required for that ) is considered as uploading and the same principle applies while sening an email.IMHO, the BSNL 400 Meg plan is really pathetic ...An hour of normal browsing, even not graphic intensive site, will cost you about 10 - 15 MBThe Home 500 plan is much more better and stable.Besides, it has Night Time Free ...

250 plan can be used only just to check emails .(No attachments). Normal browsing or sending emails with attachments will increase your data transfer. You can say that 250 is not even as good as dial up. (Sancharnet) . 0If you want to surf the net for at least 1 hour every day, then 500 is your option. After gettting a connection with 256 speeds you will definetly want to download some new softwares, games, or what ever. In 500 they have night unlimited downloads from 2.00 - 8.00 , 7 days a week. You can schedule your computer for heavy downloads during that time and get all the vast variety softwares, freegames including the latest from Sony playstation, xbox, Nintendo to your DESKTOP. You can later play them offline. You can even play online games at yahoo. It does not cost any huge data transfer to play online games at yahoo. If you want to play chess/checkers..... at yahoo online for 1 hour, the amount of data transferred during that time will be only 350 KB. Believe it I checked it many times. Its that low usage.Go with Dataone 500, they are the cheapest in India now with no initial or hidden costs. Sify, reliance have lots of hidden costs and hidden rules which will make you pay more and make you use the net less.

hey after browsing for more than 8 hours i found that the average is 2-3mb per hour (non-graphic intensive page)... 😉

Yes pupudada, you are right...normal browsing even for a long time may cost you just 2-3 mbs. Provided that the sites you access are really non-graphics and other multimedia. coz a website only sends a few kbs to your computer to laod..that's just some text..thats it...so there is always an inexpensive side of just normal browsing ..even if you keep running yahoo messenger and msn messanger for 24 hours it wont cost you more than 3-4 mbs coz it really doesnt transfers anything bulky.but ofcourse people interested in warez, softwares, songs, updates, addon, etc cannot go with this plan.hence their downloading is much more in searching for such stuffSandy

1 hr. of browsing this forum with pcitures on can take some where between 6-8Mb

i had uninstalled `flash' etc. from my computer. browse in non-graphics mode (this page takes around 22kb to load), check out 8+ forums, use mIRC 8+ hours a day, download the odd small software (3-5mb), update my spyware(s), let the a/virus update itself and with all of this manage to keep myself within 25MB per day. browsing with graphics enable on this site would just show me the emicotions and the fancy envelopes etc, so no need for that and if i do need to see a graphic.. well just `right click' and `view image'. if only `bsnl' had kept the free package from 12 midnight to 8am, it would have been a fantastic deal.. what do you all say??p.s.: forgot to say that as a broadband user i get 200 extra free calls per day (that is rs.1.20 x 200 or rs. 240) and also 100 free sms's per week (averaging 50 local and 50 nationwide for 4 weeks that is another savings of rs.600 per month). so by paying rs.600 for broadband, i'm getting the same and extra freebies worth rs.240... not a bad deal 😉

well the 200 free phone calls was published in many papers throughout india (if i am not wrong it was even discussed in this forum.. if not definately in another one).. re: the free sms, well if you check your phone bills online (you have to register yourself online in the site of bsnl) you get the offer of free sms through their portal. if you want you can pm me your mobile number and i'll send you an sms... guess the offer should be there throughout india 🙂 pupudada

I am using the 250 plan. As mentioned earlier in this post, i do not use it for games and stuff. The only heavy download that i had was the service-pack 2 for winxp which i had installed fresh. That was a whopping 100+mb ( the complete sp2 is almost twice that). Apart from that, not much traffic. Other updates like antivirus etc in my case do not exceed 10mb per week. Keep a watch on your usage. You can copy the security records from the bsnl website into an excel file. The key phrase here is "self-control" because internet usage tends to grow on you. But do pay attention to all the experienced users here. I have been using broadband for just over two weeks now. Also, i have access to a high speed line at my workplace, where i download all my professional stuff, therefore i can keep my home account in check.

i have just checked my bill online and it is, to say the least, absurd.. they have charged way beyond what should have been charged. shall be going to their office day after tomorrow. either they fix up the bill or i go to the consumers forum. i have got the screen-shots of each and every page... here are the details.. i leave the calculation to you...1090330 chargeable data flow in kb (normal hours) which after deduction of the 1gb free usage should be charged rs.82 @ rs.2 per mb (as per their old rates which was changed mid-way through the month)the free usage is = 1842803kb (even if this is charged for, the amount should be rs.3600)total of the two is rs.3682they have billed me rs.3109 (for data).. any explanations anybody?

Hi pupudada,It seems that they must have charged you even for night usage.and this creates another doubt in my mind that whether the Night Usage is free or not. BSNL does says it is but on the other hand it also charges for it..Nothing can be said about BSNL.Sandy
