Seems like a good move to me. Most, if not all smartphone users have 4G smartphones. And, the 2G network is still up for feature phone users. If this cuts costs and brings them from red to green, they should eventually do this all over the country.

Is anybody receiving 900Mhz LTE on their phones? In my case when 4G gets weak, my phone goes straight to 2G 1800Mhz these days. Might be because of spectrum reallocation?🤷‍♂️

as someone mentioned to me just now... this would be a problem for devices without volte... like pixels. they would be stuck with calls on 2g network. so it would largely suck. plus your internet would not work while you are on call.

in case of pixel. i assume fault lies with google. i think they have not even added airtel/vodafone volte support on the 3a.

Are you from Delhi???

I am also wondering, since I am using a non-VoLTE 4G smartphone, earlier when receiving or making a voice call while on 4G network, it used to switch to 3G network by default and would fall back to 4G network after the call. Now will it switch to 2G and then fall back to 4G after call.

Anyway voice quality has deteriorated these days.

@ijsa Um, no I'm from Kolkata. Yeah, if Airtel shuts down 3G in Delhi, your phone will fall back to 2G for making calls. Unfortunately, call quality will degrade because Airtel won't be allocating much spectrum to 2G either. Also, with 1800Mhz, voice coverage will be slightly poorer compared to LTE.

Iam in Kolkata..... and where ever I went, I found Airtel 4G data better than Jio.
And yes 3G network is gone and my non-VoLTE 4G handset falls back to 2G for voice calling.

But in Delhi Jio is better than Airtel in most places.

In Kolkata, Jio is good only if one has a device which supports carrier aggregation. Otherwise, their network is almost always wayy too congested.

so voice calling on 2g works fine? no volte support on your phone? 2g calling on my phone works and i have to end up using it manually at times. but would be sad if i lose access to 3G internet if they shut down 3G in haryana/ncr.

yeah 2G calling is working fine... No VoLTE support on my phone.... For data I am using the secondary Jio sim.....

They waited too long. Now even 5G is knocking on the door. Btw I ported one number to Airtel on my Pixel 2. Huge relief in terms of browsing speeds. Airtel 60 Mbps and Jio 0.1 Mbps. But sad part is Airtel doesn’t support VoLTE on any of the Pixel series. Pretty sure Google has to provide software update to enable VoLTE. Google are the real tards.
