Torrenting Problem on Spectra

hi all,

i recently took the 500 mbps 6 monthly unlimited connection from Spectra and just realised that this POS ISP throttles torrent traffic. a long time back, i saw Airtel do this but it was only for a short while and they stopped (this is more than 10-12 years back). I did not know any ISPs were still doing this so quite a rude awakening for me. I torrent a lot and this has really screwed me. Of course, the payment has already been made and i don't think they are gonna refund if i cancel so i m stuck for 6 months. I have another connection from Hathway which works great - no throttling crap.

I complained twice but their tech team just closed the complaints with the usual feedback that we don't support torrents.

Now i just wanna know 2 things:

1) I am thinking of adding a 2nd LAN port to my pc & connecting spectra & hathway on each of them. Is it possible to use 1 connection for everything except torrents while i use the other (hathway) for just torrent? would it work simultaneously or would i just have to disconnect 1 network & enable other when i want to use it? right now, its a real pain to take out the lan cable & switch to the other.

2) VPN option - so i tried ExpressVPN and well, it doesn't work. went for the free trial edition and torrents don't work for me. is there a good working VPN which will work on this Spectracr*** connection?

please suggest on the above.

thanks!

consider getting a pi maybe? it would save you a lot of hassle as you would not need to keep your computer on for longer duration. you can torrent 24x7 on VPN plus use it for other features as well like pi-hole? it is an investment though. but has been great for my purpose.

a simpler option would be to just pay for an online download service. torrent on that, and download using https/ftp at full speed.

right. my pi 2 maxes out at 10MBps. pi4 might be better but would very likely not support 500mbps. so an online service is probably the best idea here.

Instead of going for vpn try a seedbox. For me whatbox singapore servers maxed out my spectra connection. Check the speed you will get here Speedtest · Whatbox

thanks for the replies but can you guys also share your VPN experience? which vpn works with spectra?

also, can someone let me know if they have any inputs on that 2 LAN question?

You are looking for a router functionality within a computer. While any linux pc or Raspberry Pi can be configured to work as a router, the easiest way to achieve this is by using a real router as the middle man between the two wan connections and your actual computer. Ubiquity offers some nice interface for SDN and load balancing.

That said, if an ISP can control torrent traffic, you can make your router to filter torrent traffic too and let it pass through a particular WAN. It is not easy, but achievable. For example, please see this thread... Is That possible to pass Torrents from 2nd Gateway ? - MikroTik

You could setup an unencrypted VPN Server for yourself on a cheap VPS. Less secure but much faster and it'll be much better on the Pi CPU.

I also complained to them multiple times and even emailed their nodal officer and the guy above him but their answer was "we don't provide torrent speed".
Try refunding this shitty ISP and I hope this company goes under.

so spectracrap flat out told me that 'torrents are blocked as they are illegal'. now i m stuck with this POS for 6 months & they ll laugh their way to the bank with my money.

i am still trying to look at a switch or 2 LAN connections in the PC so i can channel my torrent traffic via hathway and rest of the stuff on spectra.

Tell them you want to refund and give them reason "breaking net neutrality".
It prevents discrimination of data so they cannot block torrent's traffic.
Just push for refund because getting them to unblock throttling is next to none.
Go to their site and lookup contact info of their nodal officer and spam with emails and phone calls.
If he doesn't listen then contact the guy above him and tell him to refund.
I know the pain because I had their shitty internet for 3 month plan but now I won't take it even if they give me for half the price.

if you are stuck with them... get an account on seedbox or debrid type service and use it for pure downloading 24x7 or at least whatever their fup is.

Nah, they are refusing to give refund. In fact, it is in their T&A that money will not be refunded 🙁

I cannot push this torrent thing too much as it is kinda banned in india. They could legally threaten me saying the govt has banned torrents & you could land up in jail & all that crap.

Net neutrality ended long time back. They won't buy that either. ISPs have free reign now.

I just need to pass these 6 months somehow switching between my isps for download as i will definitely not disconnect hathway.

I am not sure about VPNs because the ones i did try don't work. A couple of them did but they give shitty speeds. I get normal speeds of 50-60 mps & i have not seen those speeds on any of the VPNs i went in free trial. If anyone knows any VPNs which give free trials and actually work, i am open to suggestions.

I would suggest signing up for a cheap seedbox and downloading from there. Cheapest ones aren't that much costlier compared to a VPN.
