How to plan your Night Time downloads

Since BSNL has started Night Time free and not got a transparent enough billing system, I think it is us people who need to be very, very careful while downloading stuff at night.

Anyways, it is A LOT safer to disconnet and then reconnect during the 2 - 8 period.

Okay, so here is my tutorial on more safer Night Time Downloads ...

The biggest problem is to connect to BSNL at 2, if you plan on sleeping earlier.

1. I got this software called : Macro Express 3 ( http://www.macros.com/ ) or try searching on LimeWire or something ...
Download and install it.

2. Ask your windows Dialer to remember your username and password.

3. What macro express does is, it remembers the key strokes and mouse clicks that you perform and can repeat the same process automatically.

In Macro Express, start the recording and go and connect to BSNL as you would normally do.

4. While still recording, fire up your downloading program.

5. Stop recording. Macro Express has an option to perform these tasks on schedule, so you can do that. Put it at Everyday at 2:10 or something like that.

You need to keep Macro Express running in the taskbar.
You can now disconnect your BSNL Dataone and close the downloading program.

6. Download this program called Shutdown Machine ( http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/Shutdown-Ma...4-10138258.html ) and start it.

Set it to shut down your computer at 7:45 or something similar.
Keep the program running.

7. Keep your PC running and peacefully go to sleep ...
Thats all there is to it ...

--- Notes ---
- I use Azureus most of the time, so I have installed Speed Scheduler and set it to download only between 2am and 8 am ... just to be extra safe.

- If you have the BSNL dialer icon on the desktop, make sure that it does not move once you have recorded your macro.
Because Macro Express does not know its BSNL ...
It just knows that there is an icon at that location which it needs to double click on.

- Sometimes, there is a lot of PC activity and the dialer might take some time to start up ...
So, while recording the macro, wait for a few seconds before you hit the Connect Button ...

not bad theoretically.. the only hitch i can foresee is the movement of the `dialler' icon... will be trying it out.. ty for a nice and instructional post... 🙂

I think, for connection to disconnect, shutting down the PC is not enough, for those who have set the password in modem. Maybe modem has also be switched off for disconnectingLast day I logged at 7.30am and shut down the PC at 7.55am. Later, I started the PC at 8.30 till 9.30. But in my log I saw my usage as 7.30 to 9.30.

Well it was clear the proc was to be followed by users using dial up procedure and that was the purpose to use macros which would simulate the procedure of dialling up.

What you say is right for those who use "always on" by allowing the modem to dial and login this won't work.

Why not disable the feature of auto login by modem and use this.

Also earlier IIRC there was one procedure discussed using BAT files to do the same dialing and disconnecting and scheduling the features.

May be because I did'nt do a normal shutdown at 7.55. It was a sudden rebooting after I used a heavy application.

There is a s/w called nnCron which i find is very useful (also discussed prev) . It can dial the connection at a given time and then also hang up the connection. Can also shutdown the PC at a given time. No else s/w is reqd

Yup.There are a lot of dialers out there ...But the thing is why I liked the Macro Express approach is that I can start my Azureus too and do lots of other stuff, just like I was present ...Anyways, I dont think this will work with those who have their passwords saved on the modem.Somehow, I think saving the password on the modem does not make sense for single users.A friend of mine, is sharing his internet ( 512 kbps ) with his cousin who lives in a Bungalow opposite his house.They have saved the password on their modem and connected the modem to a router and both can use the internet simultaneously ...They also have a DHCP server running ... but that is another story ...But, for them, it makes perfect sense to have their password on their modem.

Has anyone tried using GetRight for scheduling downloads.

[APPLICABLE ONLY WHEN USING PPPOE AND DIALUP]

First in getright windows Tools->Getright configuration.

In the dialog that appears, choose Internet in the left hand side tree.

On the right now you will have 3 options,

1) always connected to do not connect
2) Connect using dial up
3) connect using other dialup networking software

Select Second option

Then below that choose your dial up option

Click advanced

Give user name and password.

------------

Part 2

Start downloading file.

Immediately after that click cancel.

Answer Yes for download later.

Now in getright window Choose Downloads

Choose Scheduled Downloads

Select start time at 2 am

Below that choose hang up modem when finished / shut down pc

This way keep adding files.

Note : You cannot say stop downloading by 8 am.

However we are normally wake up by 8 am right?
