Change Nokia Router/ONT to bridge mode

@C3PO do you have any sort of special configuration on the ONT? I am on Airtel with the same router and they are simply refusing to give me any sort of ONT, I bought a Tenda one from Amazon but I am unable to get it to work.

As mentioned in my post my router was swapped for a dumb ONT/ONU (Nokia G-010G) that operates only in bridge mode. The techs were not willing to change the router (Nokia G-140) to bridge mode because it's against their policy.

Also, the Tenda will not work (PON keeps flashing) until the LOID is registered in the OLT. The alternative is to use the same LOID as the previous CPE. It is also registered by MAC address and possibly serial number as well. You will need to get Airtel to do that for you.

@Dragooon sorry mate, the router was returned over a month back..mentioned in my earlier post. I do not remember the VLAN # any more. I am now using a dumb ONT which cannot be accessed via the WAN port of my router/firewall. For PPPoE you need to use your current username & password combination. If you cannot reconfigure the router contact TSBB's call centre for assistance. They can also help in resetting the username and password. This is sent to your RMN by SMS.

All right, thanks! I contacted them but they refused to do anything except send a technician, so I'll just wait I guess.

@Dragooon they do not give instructions on the phone or encourage end user configuration of the router/ONT. This is as per a call centre support person. So you will need to wait for the technician visit. What you can do is note down the settings once he's there.

Yeah I had to do that ultimately, my VLAN ID is 1766 (not sure if it's same throughout). Rest of the things are left to default (except IPv4 and IPv6 are enabled in WAN)

@C3PO I just got a TSBB connection and they gave me the cursed G-140. I have these options:

If I change a port to Bridge Mode, however, it just stops working. Unfortunately I haven't been able to get time to explore further but at least it's not locked down anymore?

Also, I am only getting ~10 Mbps for upload speed, so that's something I gotta ask em.

@vishal1082 as I mentioned somewhere else on this forum. bridging is not possible with this router (with Tata Sky..Airtel users have better luck). Otherwise I'd have been happy to keep it. They changed it to a dumb ONT. Please request them for one if you really want to use your own router.

BTW, I get a full 25 Mbps per the plan. But read on. Their service is lacking compared to Airtel and You BB. I've been facing problems with the GPON LED going off. They came yesterday and fixed it. Today the same thing happened. No connectivity since morning. I've registered a complaint. Lets see what happens. They take at least 24-36 hours to attend to your complaint.

I am not renewing this service when it expires in Nov. It has been disappointing. And someone has been up to no good..probably a competitor.

The same thing is happening to me also. Their Customer Care is clueless. Hopefully they improve this, because the internet itself is fantastic.

For a change a pleasant experience with TSBB's support. I requested an upgrade in speed from 25 to 50 Mbps. It was done within a matter of minutes. There's a difference of only Rs 1000 between the 25 and 50 Mbps packs with a 5 month subscription (actually 6, you get 1 month free) and IMO a "sweet spot" compared to their prices for 75 and 100 Mbps for the same validity period.

PS - I put this down to the Jio effect. Even YBB is offering 'deals' on renewals. Come November - I will have to decide whether to continue with all 3 or drop one. At this time it is TSBB..as Airtel VDSL provides a landline plus very good technical support. I truly wish Airtel launches their FTTH service in my residential area.

@C3PO Can you tell me what you said to their customer care to get your ONT changed? Here in Jaipur the visiting technicians are clueless about what I want. Additionally, this double NAT setup is blocking all incoming connections so I cannot acces my Plex server remotely. Is this also a port problem ?

@ravenous24 you need to contact their Customer Care and ask for the CPE/ONT to be replaced with a "dumb" ONT i.e. an ONT without router and wifi capabilities.

Take pains to spell it out to them in idiot-proof language because most of these support people don't understand the difference.

Double NAT will prevent you from accessing your Plex server even if you open the port. It creates a problem for torrents too and the only way out is to use a VPN preferably with a private i.e. not shared IP address.

@ravenous24 Tata Sky Broadband uses CG-NAT which causes Double NAT (causing Plex's remote connection to fail) and there's no way around it at a router level. TataSky needs to hand out dedicated IPv4 addresses (they only hand out IPv6 currently) or you can use a VPN with port forwarding or a SSH tunnel. I use a SSH tunnel to my VPS from Linode in their Mumbai data centre.
