It is true that while BSNL had the first mover advantage in 3G, they had the shoddiest 3G network even a couple of years back and even now data coverage is not even 50% of what Airtel/Vodafone-Idea offers. BSNL has good infrastructure, but maintanence is almost null. Yes many people in urban areas use their data plans as their network has improved in cities but this won't be enough to sustain them. And they have just too many employees. As the old saying goes, 'Too many cooks spoil the broth.'

Political party favouring private corporation or govt employees not being productive?, maybe its both. I certainly hope its the cost saving methodology.

in this particular case, it is the prime minister who is promoting private companies like Paytm and jio over government entities.

Good they should shut it down with mtnl and all other govt. loss making enterprises which are making losses because of their useless workforce. It make other govt. babu's to also think twice who join govt co. just to have easy Lifestyle.

This might Just be one good thing is Modi govt. has balls to do it and actually make govt. Co. more efficient and not just lazy resource hungry entity.

In my personal experience with mtnl it was horrendous to deal with these official if any time net would go down. When I finally placed a disconnection request via official letter they kept connection active saying they can't disconnect it until I personally waste time visiting their office and also pay dues for months for which they kept connection active on their own. #hopeless.

Your deposit is directly added to BSNL employees welfare fund, and they get offended if you ask for it. So they keep the connection live for few months and adjust the bill against your deposit.

It's like choosing the lesser evil. None of the private telecoms will service the widely dispersed rural areas. It took jio's market capturing tactics to bring digital call rates to the public, otherwise everyone was charging excessively.

The bane of this country is bureaucracy. They have created a cadre of generalists with no specialisation. No wonder, PSUs like BSNL, Air India are failing.

How do you expect a bureaucrat to run an organisation which is effectively competing against private organisations which are run by specialists?

SBI is a PSU right? It seems to be handling competition from private banks just fine.

though i guess the argument becomes invalid looking at the banking scams. sbi would get a bailout.

SBI is "too big to fail" i.e D-SIB. No matter how grossly it is mismanaged, the government will have to bail it out.

OMG, That is some news to improve the company. But I feel a lot of strikes incoming? 54K Employees are too much.

nothing is going to happen til election results. after that it should be fun to watch as bsnl employees go on nationwide strike. i guess jio taking over bsnl is not that far away.
