BTW, which firewall are you using ? Or atleast, for what purpose you are using a firewall ?

All the firewalls I have used, blocks both incoming and outgoing connection. Also, they provide complete log of connections made by each software (time, IP address, etc). Firewalls also have option to allow a software to connect only to the specified IP address only.

i ask again...why don't you give us the code ???

Well, for the Perl lovers among you, here's a small Perl script which finds out your usage for a particular month. This is especially useful if you use Linux, as only IE is allowed to connect to it.

You need a proper Perl environment and a few modules (LWP::UserAgent and HTTP::Cookies). You can also do this to get a manpage: perldoc dataone_usage

This script is GPLed. I'd like to know your experiences with this. I've tested it on a Gentoo Linux system.

The part which calculates the amount of free usage is not fully finished. Just be careful using it.




Good effort arvind. I'm a Perl n00b 😀 . First of all this script won't run on a windows machine without Active Perl right? So test it on a windows machine too. I'd love to run it. Atleast for Perl's sake.

Firewall is used to selectively allow/block applications from accessing the internet.

Guys I am using the utility .. it works fine .. Am not totally sure If I am being cheatedBut if you are logged on 24 hours a day then even if someone else knows my password he can't do much about it ..Coz with BSNL multiple logins is not possible..

I appreciate "shaplus" for the enthusiasm in developing the software to make things simple - and also for letting others to use the software. We all know it really hurts if the best intentions are criticised.Having said that - A person who developed such useful software should also know that they should include something like a FAQ where one of the questions is like "How can I be assured that my passwords are not used/traced by this software". There are a lot of uninformed users of internet who don't know what to suspect - so it is the responsibility of the software developer to explain them on such things even if they do not ask - and that is how people succeeded on the internet.I don't think the firewall explanation is valid. Such a solution definitely needs your password to be read by a script at the "shaplus.com" - and it is to the discretion of the folks at shaplus.com as to what they should do with the passwords. No software should ever be believed if says - "Give me your password, and I would login on your behalf and will get the thing done for you". To that effect the members have every right to be skeptical about Shaplus software, despite how noble Shaplus's intentions may be.One way to counter this kind of criticism is is by making the software open sourced. The best thing, of course, is to give a damn if no one uses it, and not ever talk about it.The story goes like this: A lot of web-sites are first started with good intentions, voucing for impartiality and transparency. It is right that good FAQ is essential for a product. But in this case what happened is that it is not a full fledged program. Actually, i did'nt have plans for distributing it, until I found it very useful for me. Also the scope of this application is very limited. Maybe tommorrow onwards BSNL can start providing total Bandwidth in its site. So I did'nt mind spending too much time on it.

I think you have misunderstood, what the program does. It does not send password to shaplus.com. It just logon to dataone site, retrieve the service records and do the calculations. Why I suggested using Firewall is because it can show you which are the applications that connect to the internet and to which sites it is connecting. Or you can use a fire wall to restrict an application to connect to only a given site. so no question of sending the password to shaplus.com or any other site.

I respect your views, you can have your own ideals. I am a freelance programmer and I develop programs in different areas of my interest.

I got so many emails to add option to exclude 2am to 8am records. So I have add that option in this tool. Download the updated version from http://www.shaplus.com/dataone/

Some visitors of this forum has expressed their doubt, whether this program can contain any spyware. As I suggested in my earlier post, use a firewall and allow this program to connect only to 10.240.43.216 (current IP address of admin site)and 61.0.0.255 (Ip address of http://www.sancharnet.in/dataoneredirect.htm).

okay after for quite some time of hesitation i did try your utility.Cool one. But you mentioned to allow the program to access only two ips.Well it did ask for permission to access 80.67.76.33😀NS (note DNS).What was that for? Is it only DNS look up? If so how would your app know the ip of the DNS server?Sandeep

Hello,To find out the IP's that are to be permited by firewall. first check your usage manually in Internet explorer without using the software. Now go to Traffic log of firewall and find out the IP nos connected while checking. Enter the same IPs permissible for this software also.regards,ShaPlus
