New connection

Hello, the Wizards of BroadBand, I am looking out for a fresh connection from dataone.. the rs250/400mb home plan.I Would like to draw from the wide experience of the members here!Will you please tell me what are the main issues here?such as 1. What are the types of modems available? -speeds, technology etc.2. Do they have to be bought at bsnl or are they available in the market? 3. What are the compatibilty issues- which would be the best choice?4. hire or buy?5. Do they conduct a site survey before installation?6a Does the regular phone share the same line as the b/b? b if so, Are the regular phone and data-one billed separately?7. Is it still worth retaining my regular phone?8. What does the technician do when he comes to my site for installation?9.And what do i need to do?10. Any other hidden issues a newbie needs to know. Might sound a trifle paranoidal, but i guess these are questions one would normally ask the service provider but alas! The office closes at 5pm and i missed them by the skin of my teeth on three occasions this week! I will try them out on Sat. However judging from the amount of wrath at CS being expressed here, i am sure i will anyway have to seek clarifications back in this forum. So please bear with me.. i dont want to be stuck with a bad decision! I would like to do it right the first time. Fistly tell us are u sure you can manage in the 400 Mb limit because for most of us, the 1Gb limit semed to be too small to remain confined into.1) You need an ADSL 2+ modem supports downloads speeds of 25Mbps with upload speeds of 1 Mbps (future proof)2) You can buy the modem from outside if you wish but now since BSNL have announced a reduction in price of modem to Rs 1200 i guess it will be better if you buy it from these people3) Reg. compatiblity issues ...go through the pages and you will find there are mostly 3 types of modem installed by BSNL people ..go for any one of these if u are willing to puchase it from outside4) All depends on you. If you think Rs 1200 /- is too costly for one time payment go for a rental basis ...or if you feel you wudnt be keeping the connection for long then hire it so that you can always return it back to them5) No site survey would be conducted, but when they come for installation if they find some fault with in the line they change it6) Yes a regular B-fone shares the same lime7) Not upto you. You have to retain it for getting a connection8) The technincian just adds a splitter to you main wire before it goes into the internal wiring iof your home if available . From the other end of the splitter he brings the line to your computer insterts it in the router and from the router into your LAN card via cat5 cable. This is what the line man deos. The next tine another tech. comes with the CD installs the PPPoE s/w and dials a connection to show its up and ruinning9)You need to enjoy;10) I would still like to lay empahasis on my first point about 400Mb ...whether this will be enough for you and mind u NU offer isnt available in this package.Think twice before you go for this package......

Right now, my habits are these:1. forum browsing, 2. downloading software updates3. Downloading wares but with caution.4. mail5. skins6. downloading jpg still pictures if any 7. google search for techie stuff.Things i don't do are:1. gaming: ( absolutely no games on my pc)2. Downoad/watch movies ( i prefer my vcd with the home-made home theater)3. Download/play songs (i prefer my home-made system with a cd player) I don't see myself doing these things in the near future too. So how do you think the bandwidth would work? Is there any rule of the thumb that says like 1 average webpage = X kilobytes or so? At my workplace there is a leased line like 8mbps and i have sort of gotten used to those speeds. At home it seems like a drag to wait for a dialup, however fast, to bring in the pages!!Thanks for your time and patience

1)First of all this one hour browsing of this forum easily eats up 12-15Mb of you badnwidth. Now a days i browse the net with all images turned off so one hour of browsing this fourm usually takes 6-8 Mb which is pretty much. If you have opera then you can use that in cahced mode
2) There you go . Updates easily take a much part of bandwidth although it depends on size of update, i m sure that updates may be atleast be 20-25 Mb or upwards which is a major use of badnwidth
3) Downlaoding warez on 256 kbps with caution is next to impossible. You will able to download 2Mb/minute so being cautionable is too much expectation
4) Mail doesnt count much if text is the only matter. If you are doing some attachments (uploads also count) then you must take care
5) Depends on size of skins
6) Donwloading images are sure to suck a considerbale amount of bandwidth
7) If its text its with in limits

There is no hard and fast rule that 1 web page = XX kilobytes. It all depends on the content you are viewing. If there are lot of pics and flashes on the webpage then that will use much more b/w considering only to text.

If you are still sure you can limit yourself to 400 Mb/month give it a try. You can change your plan for the next month if this doenst suit you (changing plans is now free of cost).

Thank you abdulrahman004 for having put the whole thing in perspective. I get a good picture of what i am up against. The penalty billing for exceeding the d/l limit, as i understand from the posts here, is extremely high isn't it? As you mentioned, i might just try it for a month or two. if it does not work, i will migrate. I anyway ended up paying close to rs700/- pm month for my current 115kbps dialup itself so it would be worth trying out anyway. And thanks firoz16 for pitching in. Can't complain later that i wasn't warned!! I will keep in touch. meanwhile, thanx everyone for the time, patience and may i add, precious bandwith that you spent for me!! 🙂

Thought i would revive this thread with a few more questions.

After a lot of debate, a few of us here have finally decided to try out the 250 home plan. We are going to register today 🙄

1. I have been trying to figure out why everyone is unhappy about the download limits! The primary reason, I understand, as someone else in this forum wisely put it, is the "Yeh Dil Maange More" syndrome. Some restraint and planning (strictly an oldtimer's viewpoint) should help here but I guess the biggest problem in planning our sessions is in knowing the exact usage data. If the service provider's website or customer support isn't very useful, then this could be tricky. It is very easy to go over the edge and then the overuse billing is deadly!! ( I am told PPoE does not provide data-metering unlike in the case of dialup).
Hope i have done my homework well !!

2. The PPoE requires ethernet as the name suggests but my pc is rather short on smps power with 2 hdds, 2cdrws, and a usb optical mouse with all the gimmicks! I wonder if adding a PCI ethernet card is going to be the last straw.
Can i buy a dsl modem with a usb port and still use the PPoE? Are there some issues here? Which model would best suit this need?

oldtimer, first of all here's wishing you all a successful registration and welcome to the club.the main dangers lies for them who have not used the net before and even more so for those who have struggled with the dial-up... most of them will forget their limits in the joys of surfing, d/loading with broadband... something like.. `just one more d/load.. promise i shall not d/load any more.. the promise is broken every day as one feels the power of a newly appointed king. at the end of the month the d/load will have far exceeded the quotai also have a writer, a dvd drive, 2 hdd's, optical mouse, power speakers and so therefore a lan card will not cause problems to you. i doubt if you can use a usb modem.data metering is done at bsnl's site. the problem is that it is not done efficiently and you need to spend some time with your calculator to figure out your total usage... not a big chore if you do the same on a, say weekly basis.as for the thanks that you have been so kind enough to mention... no need for that.. we are all here to help each other.. enjoy.. 😛 pupudada

Hi all,Thanks pupudada (can't help mentioning it). Got the demand note for the 250/- home plan. The only cost was the 1200/- for the modem. They said it might take about a fortnight to complete. I have an ethernet card lying around. Will try it soon. oldtimer

Thanks coolbuddy_79. Your point is well taken. I have been warned earlier in this thread too, qouting one example from Abdulrahman004 above! I do admit that it is very important to take the right decision at this stage. It would be foolish to ignore the suggestions of all the experienced users in this forum. I am placing all my bets on just two facts:
1. That i will not be able to find that much of time to browse at home.

2. Any internet activity of a professional nature can be done in my workplace where bandwidth is really good.

This is really to get rid of the dialup which is not cost effective. I think that having to pay 500 bucks a month for the "World Wide Wait", as i am doing now, isn't a good idea.
Perhaps i can accomplish the same amount of work for just half the cost and the time. Primarily, I don't want to throw away good money for just staring blankly at my screen! " Yeh dil kare dhak-dhak at the rate of 40p/min!"

oldtimer hello.. you can do a reasonable good amount of browsing (with graphics off).. try to uninstall `flash' & `shockwave' players. try to average out your browsing to roughly 8MB per day... which will leave you with 100MB for your antivirus updates for a month along with an extra 60MB which should be sufficient for your emails, and yet leave some extra for any emergency.yes, you can carry out professional internet activity at this speed of 256kbps (though not video chatting)...with the advent of this rs.250 package, dial-up has been finally put to rest, except for them who are logged on 24/7 for d/loading stuff... it may work out cheaper than rs.250 broadband, but if one takes into account the extra electricity involved, the wear and tear involved etc., it is not worth itif the bsnl gives a higher amount of MB's as the datacap, then broadband will be actually what it is the world over (though most of the international players hardly have datacaps, or even those who have, allow a good amount of MB's).. 😀 Pupudada

Hi oldtimer...if you are really going for the 250 plan....then u should be cautious abt the download...coz once started you sometimes forget abt the rest of the world...What you can do is disable images and flash etc form you IE or whatever Browser u use as suggested by papudada...and u can install some software like BWMeter wich will count ur data traffic and can warn you if u exceed the daily traffic (that you will need to set), also you need not regularly visit BSNL Portal for Service Records coz u always have them traced in ur computer (approx.) all this stuff will surely help u limit ur data traffic..Sandy

you're right... my fingers were itching too when i waiting for the connection, but 15 days seems quite a long time... seems that they are getting huge number of new connections 😀
