Social media influencing needs to be regulated. But this ruling seems troubling to me. I mean generally brands would pay influencers to say good things about their own products. In this case, it is alleged that the guy might have been paid by a company to bad-mouth a competing brand. He did not make things easy for himself by linking to a competing product with a referral link from what I understood from the article.

The ruling states that regular folks like you and me have no expertise to judge a product like coconut oil in this case. What next? Patanjali can now easily go after youtubers and bloggers who have talked about how their products like honey are adulterated.

The main component of regulation which is to make it mandatory for content creators to highlight sponsored component as content they were paid to post remains missing from Indian regulations from my understanding. With strict fines and penalties for incompliance.

I don't know how, but my twitter account is tagged as Social Media Influencer. It was tagged long before Musk took over.
I don't think I post anything valuable or endorse anything. I just troll and rant against current Maharashtra govt 🤣
