A cousin is planning to buy a mac to replace her aging Dell. Any mac enthusiast here who can tell me which particular series to avoid? I remember reading about how some of their recent models have logic board issues which can potentially require multiple replacements if you get a crappy unit.

I recommended the basic Air model but I assume she could go for the regular Mac model. Her requirements are quite simple (powerpoint presentations and reading radiology reports being the primary use I believe) so even a 1-2 year old model would be just fine. just want to avoid suggesting her a model that is from the series which is risky to go for.

I have the 13.3" MacBook Air. 2015 model. My brother has 2017 MacBook Pro 15" with highest possible specs. Another cousin has similar model. The Pro versions are being literally ripped off for heavy duty software development and has never been turned off after purchasing. All are working just fine. Make sure Apple Care is taken for peace of mind.

Not an enthusiast, but as a owner of macbook air (2014), I have had both positive and disappointing experiences. It still works fine after 4 years of heavy usage. But, from time to time, it wouldn't turn on, but would turn on after a while or if I reset the power. My guess is that it could be an issue with the LCD panel.

Apple mac line has had numerous issues in the past. But, recent macs don't seem to have much issues. Yet, luck plays a part. Because, certain percentage of hardware would come with some kind of manufacturing defect that is unnoticeable at first usage. Apple is no different. What I don't like Apple personally is that they don't acknowledge the manufacturing defect and the customers would end up paying for it (the manufacturing defect). Their service policy is even more worse. Classic example is...

Consider oneself as lucky if the hardware stays without any major issues for 4 years. Of course, I was / am lucky. But, I wouldn't be buying another mac with its current state. But, wouldn't think twice to buy it, if they change their policy towards their own customers who are currently being ripped-off all over the world.
