Considering buying Spectra. Need some advice

@subhramani Yep, I get good speeds as well. Over the last couple of weeks, its been really stable with almost nil downtime.

One thing I have noticed, when you get IP ranges allotted from some subnets, the performance sucks. I don't recall the exact subnet, but when that happens, I just change the MAC address of the router (this involves registering it as a new CPE, the process described by @kevinkeller above) to get an IP address from a different range which usually resolves it for me.

How do you change the MAC address of the router? I mean doesn't the router one physical address? I don't understand this concept of changing the MAC address... a little more explanation would be helpful, please!!

@subhramani I don't recall the exact steps for the D-Link router, but you do have an option in the UI to clone the mac address of the WAN interface. The MAC address is easily changeable in most routers as ISPs tend to bind the connection to a specific MAC just like Spectra in this case (although Spectra has a self service option to register a new CPE), so its easier to provide a clone system mac address option on the router.

I had to move to a new house in the same area, so I asked for shifting the connection to my new place. Initially there was a delay from my side in submitting the new address proof but they repeatedly followed up. After the documentation was done, on the 3rd day (there was a weekend in between too), the cabling person visited to know the exact location. He said there are no splitters in the area, so he had to get the main cable to my building and installed a weird looking splitter device.

This time they used pre-made cables, so there was no splicing necessary. I would say they did a great job in getting the installation done and also ensured the wiring was done cleanly as much as possible.

For shifting, an engineer visit is not applicable, so I just connected the ONT and router devices. They then had to make some other changes on their backend as I was now connected to a different OLT perhaps? Anyway once the backend change was done, internet started working and its all good!

Overall, I found the shifting experience pretty straight forward, and there was less than 30-60 min of downtime as the internet continued to work at my previous place until I had to disconnect the router/ONT (yeah I left it running at the old place as my housemates had not got a new connection yet)

They said there would be a shifting charge of Rs 500 + tax, but I don't see it yet in the portal, perhaps they'd add it later.

So they added the shifting charge of Rs 500 + tax in the next bill that got generated. It wasn't free! 😛

@varkey i'm moving to Kasturi Nagar too in a week or so. How has your experience been so far with spectra?
I did enquire them about a Static Public IP but they say its not available for Home Connections!

@The_PC_Guy Port forwarding, I haven't really checked recently, I now use a Mikrotik hap ac2 as my primary router and haven't really tested it, but I guess it should work as before. The last time I had checked ports above 10000 were able to be dynamically port-fowarded through NAT-PMP and uPnP.

PMd you the referral details.

Since the past few weeks, I've been noticing that the connection is sluggish or not as responsive as before, a speed test still shows pretty great speeds and downloads etc are okay, but then it lacks that quick responsiveness.

For example, say opening Instagram, it takes a bit of time for the stuff to load initially. Same with websites, the time taken for the initial connections to be established is a bit high increasing the load time.

@The_PC_Guy and others on Spectra, is it the same for you guys too?

I see. Most of the mobile apps like Zomato, Swiggy, Facebook etc load really slow for me, and has reached a point that it irritates. I am considering switching to some other provider if available in my area. If Airtel FTTH is available, might try that (not interested in their VDSL service).

That from my experience has given a much worse experience not sure but it could be related to bad latency to Singapore from spectra
