Hi

I want to set up wifi at my home. My concern is will a wifi router be able to propogate upwards to my room upstairs. The broadband modem is in a room at the bottom of the stairs, and my room is at the top of the flight of stairs.

Questions on my mind:
[*]Will i be able to browse upstairs if the router is kept downstairs? Or do i need to extend a wire upstairs to keep the router on the floor above.
[*]I understand Wireless-N routers have better range. So, Should i go for a Wireless-G or a Wireless-N router?
[*]What model would you recommend? And whats is the approx cost of W-G and W-N models? Any recommended shops in Gurgaon / Nehru place?
[*]Whats the cost of a signal-booster/ bridge/ repeater/ whateveryoucallthatthingie?
Thanks in advance

only the latest laptops might support N. mine only supports G so i got the Linksys wrt54g wifi router which has a good range.i have placed the router in my room on the upper floor and i am able to browse with my tablet pc in the ground floor of my bungalow...hth

Wireless n routers are very expensive. 'g' routers are best. should be able to get you decent coverage. The speed of transmission is 54mbps. more than adequate! you don't need any boosters. Linksys has wireless routers with speed boosters - this is supposed to work with XP, may not with Vista. All the best

Wireless Routers - Best 802.11g Wireless Broadband Router Reviews

Quote
the second generation of wireless routers for broadband home networks
employs 802.11g technology. 802.11g wireless routers supply more network
bandwidth than their older 802.11b counterparts. That lets you add more computers
to a network without bogging it down. You'll also notice faster file sharing and printing.

Access Points - What Is a Wireless Access Point?
"access point wireless"

Definition: Wireless access points (APs or WAPs) are specially configured nodes
on wireless local area networks (WLANs). Access points act as a central
transmitter and receiver of WLAN radio signals.

Access points used in home or small business networks are generally small,
dedicated hardware devices featuring a built-in network adapter, antenna,
and radio transmitter. Access points support Wi-Fi wireless communication standards.

Although very small WLANs can function without access points in so-called "ad hoc"
or peer-to-peer mode, access points support "infrastructure" mode.
This mode bridges WLANs with a wired Ethernet LAN and also scales the
network to support more clients. Older and base model access points allowed
a maximum of only 10 or 20 clients; many newer access points support up to 255 clients.

Why don't you go for ADSL Wireless Router? It actually eliminates your Modem too!!!

The same problem I previously faced in my home. First actually I bought D-Link Wireless ADSL Router & found it didn't work efficiently between 2 Floors.

Then I digged the information & found Linksys SRX200 is fulfill my requirement.

Since it got 2 Antennas to cover dead spots efficiently.

[*]Internet-sharing Router, 4-port Switch, with a built in speed and range enhanced Wireless-G (802.11g) Access Point
[*]Shares a single Internet connection and other resources with Ethernet wired, Wireless-G, -B, and other SRX devices
[*]New SRX technology: the farther away, the more advantage -- up to 6 times faster than standard Wireless-G (802.11g)
[*]SRX also increases wireless range up to twice as far and reduces dead spots in coverage area
First I kept this Router in downstairs & got 45% Signal Strength at Up-Stairs. Then I placed it in Up-Stairs & got 65-70% Signal Strength at Down Stairs.

Even I checked my neighbor's house for Signal & got around 20-30% successfully.

For more info on Linksys SRX200, Here is an link: Linksys.com - Products/Wireless/Basic Networking/Broadband Routers/Wireless-G (802.11g)/WRT54GX2

Cheers...
