Jessica Chastain in Talks for Villain Role in 'X-Men' Spinoff 'Dark Phoenix'

Jessica Chastain is in talks to star as the villain in Fox’s X-Men spinoff Dark Phoenix, with Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Sophie Turner, and Nicholas Hoult all returning to the franchise.
Fox also announced Wednesday that Simon Kinberg is making his directorial debut on the tentpole from his own adaptation. He’s best known for writing and producing films in the franchise, including X-Men: Apocalypse and X-Men: Days of Future Past.
Dark Phoenix will shoot in Montreal. Kinberg is also producing along with Hutch Parker and Lauren Shuler Donner.

'X-Men: Dark Phoenix' Will Bring Back James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and More

The seeds for the next mainline X-Men movie were firmly planted in X-Men: Apocalypse, with the studio recently confirming that the 2018 movie will follow the memorable "Dark Phoenix" storyline from the comics. We saw glimpses of this storyline in X-Men: The Last Stand, but a more fleshed-out version directed by longtime X-Men producer Simon Kinberg will arrive on November 2 of next year with Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner reprising the role of Jean Grey following her introduction in X-Men: Apocalypse.

'Dark Phoenix' Pushed Back to June 2019, Untitled 'Deadpool' Opening In December

Fox also delayed 'Alita: Battle Angel' and 'Gambit.'
20th Century Fox is making a few key changes to its release calendar, including pushing back Alita: Battle Angel and Dark Phoenix, while adding an untitled Deadpool movie to its slate this year.

The untitled Deadpool movie will open in wide release on Dec. 21 this year. Meanwhile, Robert Rodriguez's Alita will move from Dec. 21 to Feb. 14, 2019. Dark Phoenix, the next X-Men installment, moves from Feb. 14, 2019 to June 7, 2019. The studio has also moved its long-in-development (and directorless) X-Men spinoff Gambit from June 7, 2019 to March 13, 2020.

The release date changes come as the pending Disney/Fox merger is expected to close at the end of the year and which will give Disney's Marvel Studios the rights to the X-Men.

In X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite -- not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.
