Hi.

Connection Type: ADSL
Modem: TP-Link W8970

Whenever I restart the modem. It does show second light properly. But third light (Internet) doesn't come up.

Second light is stable and third light also is stable when it comes online.

But I have to wait for hours for the third light to come up since it doesn't come in minutes but it's very random.

No I don't have any kind of disturbance in the phone line. Internet is also stable when it connects.

It is just it doesn't connect as it used to connect. It takes so many minutes if lucky or many hours (I have to leave it on) to connect it.

It wasn't before the upgrade happened at the Airtel System and exchange. Before that it was very fast like within 1 minute or so it used to connect.

Here are the system log:

PAD packets are used to negotiate PPP sessions. It starts with a PADI (Initiation packet), server responds with a PADO (Offer), client sends a PADR (Request) and the server responds with a PADS (Start). Sessions are terminated from either end with a PADT (Terminate).

In your case I see "Timout waiting for PADS" errors, this is because you have an unstable link. The DSL is dropping as it says "SYSTEM Notice DSL link down", so PPP times out over a period then attempts to renegotiate. If the link to any portion of the network between the PPP client and PPP server is still down then the client sends it's PADI but never receives a PADS. This process keeps repeating until there is a stable link. The problem also is that airtel has a system in place that only allows one successful connection attempt every few minutes, this is to prevent too many PPP sessions from being logged by an unstable link, it will not send that PADS back that your modem is looking out for, the modem then tries repeatedly for the same, that is probably why your connection takes a long time to stabalise.

The issue could be the modem or at airtel's end. What VPI/VCI do you have in the modem and also what encapsulation is setup?

Don't mind but I have days when I did router restart like many times within few minutes. (Within the bracket of 5-10 minutes). I never faced such issue that time.

This thing is changed after the upgradation only.

According to you, Airtel has it since long or they have added this lockout thing just few months back?

Check the screenshot:

The lockout thing has been around for quite a while, it only kicks in if your PPP session doesn't start cleanly, i.e the PADS part.Restarting your router doesn't cause that, so that shouldn't be an issue.

The modem config looks good for the VPI/VCI and Encapsulation. I would assume you had the exact same modem and config before airtel upgraded your area?

Yes I had same modem and config before Airtel upgraded. What happen?

I can only assume that something is wrong at airtel's end then.

@Karan How can I get it fixed since you know their team is lack of knowledge and Airtel itself doesn't move their ass to fix issues or find out the problem.

The first thing you could do, if possible, try another DSL modem, if you have another or maybe borrow one from someone to test and rule out yours causing issues. Sometimes the modem can also cause issues like this.

After that you would need to bug airtel to diagnose and resolve this issue.

Yes, they very much do. Not saying that it is the issue here, just trying to rule it out. Its the easiest diagnostics you can do without involving airtel. Since airtel changed stuff at their end, at times the new server end hardware may not go well with the modem and also cause issues. If two different modems exibhit the same symptoms then the issue would most definately be at airtel's end.

Just request them to terminate your connection stating reason you are unable to use the broadband because they have not fixed it. Send a copy to nodal officer also.

I had similar problem which was giving problem for almost six months and slowly died almost completely with even the phone making too much crackling noise. They soon called and requested me to give them two weeks time for which I would not be billed. First a technician came and checked everything from the modem to the dp but even at that point the line was almost dead. So he figured it was fault with the underground cable and after getting approval from his superiors he drew a cable over the house from the back street and connected me back. It took some time because they had to change the connections in the big blue box to divert the line to the back street.

Here is the log on different (New TP-Link Modem ordered from Amazon India)

At first when I added the details into the modem, it connected but after restarting it. It didn't connect and started showing this below:

@Karan One weird thing. Whenever I use my Huawie Modem (VDSL + ADSL Modem if you remember Airtel is giving with new connection). It connects normally with ADSL.

Huawie is working normal with ADSL Connection.

I did rebooted the modem multiple times and everytime it was connected within 1-2 minutes.

Err.. then why did you buy the other DSL modem? You should have mentioned this fact earlier too, there was no need to get the new modem. However, since you did get another TP-Link modem and both TP-link modems are facing the same issue and the Huawei isn't, then there is a possibility that either the hardware (chipset) or the firmware of both TP-Link modems isn't working (compatibility) with whatever upgrade airtel did in your area. You could have airtel check on their end if they can change some settings or get a modem from another vendor or even continue using the Huawei if that isn't being used for the VDSL.
