Need some help with router for upgraded speed

Recently act upgraded my plan to 150 Mbps. They did change the cable to cat 6 . When the cable is wired directly to my desktop I can see the full 150 but via the router I get only around 90 or so. I have a Linksys e900 and evidently this is a router that cannot support the 150 speed. My questions are
1. If I don't care much for my wifi speed, is there a ethernet switch I can use to make sure that my desktop will see 150. This is also due to the fact that I don't want to invest in a new router. If so what hardware should I buy?
2. If I do intend to upgrade the router what should I purchase? Act themselves give the ac1200 Netgear r6220 but their prices are bad. Is that a good router? Does anyone have experience with it and will it deliver the promised 150? If not what router would you suggest I buy

Please advice as I am unable to utilise the upgraded speed and I do want to resolve this asap. So please do help me out.

PS : act has been very unhelpful in this regard, their support people have no idea about this and their service people barely answer. The most frustrating customer support experience🙁

I think a router with dual band support will do it for you.

802.11ac is dozens of times faster, and delivers speeds ranging from 433 Mbps (megabits per second) up to several gigabits per second.

I did a bit of background reading. From that, 802.11 N type router should support upto 600-900 Mbps.

Your Linksys E900 router ports only support a (theoretical) max of 100 Mbit/s. Your computer's ethernet port supports gigabit ethernet (1000 Mbit/s). Just buy a router which has gigabit ethernet ports.

Routers come in all budgets. It depends on what the user wants. Remember, every person's residence & requirement is different/unique

Thanks for the response, I think considering the future it would be better to invest in a 802.11ac as it is the newer standard, what do you think? I would like for you to recommend some routers is possible

Apologies for not reading the FAQ first.
So considering the fact that I do need to upgrade to a router, can you please suggest some router? I know that it is requirements based but my only requirement is to utilize the upgraded speed and I know that ACT charges higher when you purchase a router off of them.

Also I ask for recommendations here based on their experience in using and configuring the router. If you can help out with some suggestions then I can make my final choice.

I am also confused that once 802.11 ac is decided upon is ac750 enough or do we need to get to ac1200? There are just so many standards that it is so frustrating 🙁

Also does the wire from router to dekstop need to be cat 6? In that case I do need to buy that too right?

c. You must use cat 5e or a higher spec cable between your router and your computer (cat 5e, cat 6 etc). Please do NOT use cat 5 cables.

New routers come with an ethernet cable. Just make sure it's at least cat 5e.

According to me, the average user does NOT need 40 Mbit/s on a phone/tablet. However, if you WANT faster wireless speed, it's up to you.

If you dont mind me asking, what would be your recommendation. I did see that thread and once again the number of choices are mind boggling.. so if its not too much trouble would you help in narrowing down one for me?

And just to clarify - is ac750 good enough to get 150 mbps, what would the speed on table be as opposed to ac1200?

Try posting there with your requirements and budget, and hopefully more people will respond. I've not done any research into routers for a few years now, so I'm really not the best person to ask.

AC750 is more than enough to get 150 Mbit/sec. Just remember that there will be a huge reduction in wireless AC signal strength through brick walls. You said that you don't care about wifi speeds. So, that should not be a problem for you.

Decide on a budget and features. That will help narrow down your choices.

Will post there with requirements just to get a better idea. I do need good to average wifi strength too, if I am to invest in a router might as well satisfy all needs.
