Excitel Broadband Ethernet Cable is LIVE!

So I noticed when I was trying to crimp a new connector onto the excitels ethernet cable that it was live! tester screwdriver glew brightly when I touched it with the wire. I don't think that ethernet cables are supposed to be live unless it's POE which in this case it isn't.

Is there any way to fix this and is this affecting my stability of my Internet in anyway? This seems like a major electrical hazard that could potentially damage the router.

this is why i got myself a surge protector when i got connected to excitel. people have reported on the forum that their PCs got fried during storms (on sify broadband). one guy even posted photos of water coming down to his PC through the ethernet cable (on sify broadband). insane.

i got this one...

Ubiquiti Networks - Ethernet Surge Protector

and of course, do alert the lco that this is happening. if he is a reasonable guy, he would check where the current is leaking from.

Thanks, I'll buy the surge protector. I did tell my LCO about this and he said the issue is 'minor' and need not be fixed. Can a live ethernet cable cause frequent disconnections of ethernet?

sucks. can you check the strength of the current using a multimeter? 😛

you would need to find a screw that fits in that hole though. it does not come with it which is idiotic. took a while to find something that fitted it perfectly.
