hey i was with vsnl since it's inception (nearly).. i joined them on the 17th of august 1995.. got broadband (512kbps) a few days after they launched the same... so it's more like me going back to my old home 😉 Pupudada!

I've been forum lurking for a while and missed on contributing to the discussion between our 2 scene memebers pupudada and bobee. Oh well. I have to agree with the coments of people here who feel BSNL will not do much to increase Data Transfer limits, since a. BSNL has never been known for their altruism b.They make more money this way.I was talking to an Airtel guy the other day and asked him why Airtel was being a bastard as well by limiting their broadband plans [no the 128kbps ones] and he mentioneed a few things1.Right now Airtel is meeting its growth projections [the broadband div] he mentioned that they are installing close to 300 DSL connections a day just in Bangalore and more than 10000 a month pan india . Since people are signing up at such a rate for their plans inspite of the data trasfer limits and the fact that none of their broadband plans are even 24x7 they will continue to offer broadband at these price points and data caps.2. They're also fucking around since they are aware they can respond to any BSNL tarriff changes instatly and more importantly RIC has postponed its entry into retail broadband until mid 2006 giving them an extra year to milk us!So anyway just thought I should add what i know and suggest you chaps use your minds creatively to get all the stuff you want from the net without downloading it yourselves. Before anyone asks me for them I used to and still trade extensively with friends its cheaper and theoretically my datatrasfer speed is 25mbps 😉[That would explain how i had 200gb of stuff before i ever even got a net connection.]2. Co-operative/co ordinated downloading - just coordinate with a friend so you guys dont dl the same stuff. This way my 2 friends and I dl more than 100gb of stuff a month.Oh well long post. Sorry if I bored anyone. See ya guys around.

yea Vince, I know about shipit from ubuntu, but i download all the popular distros hehe... i also heard a couple of people getting notices from the customs agents for the CDs! hehe

i'd like to know if there is a http://bitch-slap.the-freakin-bsnl-cmd.com/ somewhere...

damn, if RIC comes in mid-2006, they are greedy Gujaratis themselves... I'll have to wait til retirement before I get decent broadband over here...

someone told me what 3G-CDMA means... "teen gujrati chor, dhirubhai, mukesh, anil" ! LOL

dont get me wrong, im not cancelling my dataone service or anything... im waiting for some better packages from BSNL.... if not... i'll stick with my 512k plan for speed... and sign up for some unlimited package (128k) from airtel as well...!!!! Yes, BSNL_CMD, you're right... I'm desperate... to beat the living daylight outta the dumb ISPs across India...

A good suggestion and one I will be implementing soon is to keep your old pc when you get a new one or pick an 1gig box for 5-10k and then make it a linux box and plug in 2 airtel 128kbps unlimited connections. So now you have an actual firewall as opposed to those fake ones from Zonelabs etc and you have a 256kbps unlimited connection. Yes i know it sounds expensive but Id rather spend the money on getting stuff this way rather than spending 1-2k a month on cds which make the audio/movie mafia industry richer or playing a 150 bucks to a multiplex to watch an edited and censored movie while people talk on their cellphones or make out.

that is what we are planning to do here. plug in 2 128 lines into a linux box and get a common 256 line. maybe add more in the future... 😛 would need a lot of network cards for sure.

i just need them to give a 256kbps package for like 1500 bucks a month unlimited. that would make my life a lot easier.

hey sushubh, if you plug in say, 4 lines into a router/firewall linux/bsd box, and use, say, bittorrent client... would the multiple connections be spread across those lines from one client PC? what software would you use for that? some sort of load-balancing daemon?

i think a server can combine the bandwidth of multiple lines and deliver them in a common stream. that is what my under trainee linux admin tells me. the problem has been the linux. fedora 3 core absurdly did not support the serial mouse we have 😛

lol there was a good article and discussion on slashdot today about Linux and how it should try to set some basic standards atleast when it comes to packaging etc

hmmm, i thot a single TCPIP connection needs a "port" which is bound to a "host" which is one NIC (network card).... so what does he mean by "combined to a single stream"... you must need multiple TCPIP connections... like bittorrent makes multiple connections for one download... or maybe UDP would be combined...or you could just force downloading off separate lines... example if download 4 linux CDs... force one per line (or 2 per line if you have 2 lines)... oh well...why dont the dumb ISPs read these posts and just offer 512 unlimited for like Rs 4000/- per month... or reduce the price a bit and give some good/reasonable limits... makes my blood boil... damn retards!

Lol calm down Vishal. No point losing it the telcos dont care, and never will. Try making friends with the Sysadmin at your work place/university. My friend became friends with the sysadmin at RVCE; that plus a ext hdd ensured 50gb of stuff a month.

that doesnt require load balancing since both OS (windows and linux) include functions for using multiple TCP/IP cnxns to be outputted thru one port. In Windows it is called Routing and remote access and in linux it is Masquerading ... both require to interact with firewall for this function to take effect. Obviously for flexibility of options i would recommend linux can handle this better.Ultimately u need more than 1 NIC for this in plain words.
