FTP Unavailable on ACT Fibernet Broadband

I am fresh customer of act fiber-net and developer. As part of my job , i need to access different ftp servers , but via act "internet" its not working. I had a talk with the Technical guy, he said that explicit encrypted connection is not allowed , because there system is designed in such a manner[Double NAT ] that won't allow such kind of activities and also ssh ,SFTPs is allowed. Should change the configuration of my server to satisfy this? The only motto which I took the connection was this, ftp. And they are saying that, if I want to use ftp, I have to pay 2500 for static IP, why should I?. ftp is part of internet but not for there "internet". At the time of connection, agent told me that s IP was free but not now. Actually I don't require s IP, I want this problem to be solved. Even dial up connection won't create this issue.

just get a cheapo VPN. ip shortage is a real problem. i cannot use excitel with my cctv for the same reason and it is not even something that can be considered as business usage.

i assume it should all be resolved through a vpn?

Yeah, I got a cheap secondary VPN with free portforwarding to bypass the CGNAT.

They gave me a static private IP for free which is connected to a gateway that forwards all ports.

Ask for a static private IP.

I'm not in consent with you! You my friend is stated to speak ISP language with a chalta hai attitude, first FUP & now this? where the F**K is net neutrality? now FTP tomorrow SMTP, after that PoP , people like you earning in millions can afford dedicated VPN not everyone!

and do you think cheap VPN will give you anything even remotely 100mbps port speed ?
I spend around 12$ for VPN which is hosted in T3, and it hardly gives me speed of 5mbps. Also, don't think people like developer only work from home and only upload in mb, people work in videos are also remotely working who need to upload gigabits to client ftp server and majority wont give you plain FTP access.

I guess ACT is blocking FTP due to some mis-management, if not. its the beginning of their end!

1. If you are unhappy with your ISP, change it.
2. If it's a business expense, charge your client. If you don't have business clients, consider it a business expense and deal with it.
3. You are doing commercial activity on a home connection. Check what ACT policies are about it.
4. I do not have to make millions to pay for a USD 5 VPN.
5. If your USD 12 VPN is giving you 5mbps, you need to find a better service. I recommend trying out PIA, it costs less than USD 4. You can afford to pay for a USD 12 VPN, so I suggest trying out ProtonVPN Plus. You should easily get 50mbps on it. In fact, any decent VPN with servers in India would give you great speeds as you need to just bypass VPN restrictions.

Yes, I think it's stupid if ACT is blocking FTP and SSH type services. Lack of static IPs should not be a reason because Excitel has double NAT and both works fine on it. But this only affects a small percentage of their customers who run websites for themselves or have clients. If I were in your place, I would find a better service provider. Excitel does not work on CCTV for me so I pay for a cheap backup Airtel connection. I use Excitel for what it is great for and I use Airtel for what it is great for. Again, it is out of necessity and does not require me to make millions. It's a small additional expense. Still cheaper than using Airtel full time.

ACT is not blocking FTP or SSH. It's a side effect of double NAT which they fixed with no complaints for a lot of people. Not sure what they're doing about it now though.

The OP looks like they're talking about outgoing FTP connections though which I can confirm are not blocked at all in Bangalore at least.

Yup. Incoming FTP is very different from outgoing FTP. Incoming would not work on double nat or whatever it is called. Same for SSH. You would need public IP.

I am curious. Can you access a PC connection with IPv6 by just typing its IPv6 address in the browser like IPv4 address? 😛

I do wish for it to become a standard but moving to IPv6 is gigantic pain in the ass. Some ISPs have already set up dual-stack so we could only hope they start moving to IPv6 rather than staying there. I'm not exactly sure what ACT blocks FTP means, My ISP deploys similar double NAT setup and SSH/ SFTP seems to work just fine for me.

Yes, you can access a PC or other websites (or other services like FTP etc) just by typing IPv6 address or also the *SAME* DNS hostname like www . google . com , if IPv6 is active in you OS and ISP - like for my Jio 4G JioFi device gives IPv6 address though I haven't tested it, I just disabled it for now. The reason you can use the same DNS hostname like www . blahblah . com because DNS itself can convert the name to both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses at the same time and your OS/browser will connect the preferred way, depending on how it's configured. 🙂

right. forum has a ipv6 address. but i cannot use it because my isp uses IPv4/IPv6 gateway.
