The only option to share a single broadband connection across three home PC's (1 Desktop and 2 Laptops) without the pain of installing a web-of-wires was going wireless. 🙂 Finally picked up a Linksys54GS Wireless Router and two similar branded PCMCIA Cards. 🙂 Started hooking up the wires as suggested using the step--by-step CD based installation guide. However, have not been able to get the network up and running. 🙁 The steps are simple1. Start by initiating the internet connection without the wireless router connected2. Add the Router and power it3. Configure the Encryption settings (optional)After these steps the installer program - checks for the internet connection and prompts a message saying "Could not connect to the internet - You should restart the Modem''Have tried doing again and again to no avail. 🤔 I am using the standard D-Link Router supplied by MTNL (which I understand perfoms the functions of both a Modem and a Router).I got some clue that MTNL's D-Link Router's Router function might probably need to be switched off to enable my Linksys Router to Perform that function - but I have no clue aboout how to do that.Any help from someone who's tried something similar. 🙁

I guess you should d/c the MTNL router and connect the wireless router in its place. You'll have to check the settings applied to the MTNL router by going to 192.168.1.1 in ur brwoser. Get the exact DNS IPs, the connection works over PPPoE. AFter that configure your router with the username password, and similar settings to those on the MTNL router........and you should be set.

Wireless router + ADSL modem that could be used in place of MTNL router costs 8,000 Rs (minimum), while a Wirelss router that can be used with MTNL router can be purchased for 2,000.

Plus MTNL will not have an option of blaming you for using a non-standerd router.

BTW, I got my MTNL connections just a fwe hours back. I am at office right now, and MTNL guys have left MTNL router at my place. 😀 😀 😀 Issue is, the room where my PC is located does not have phone line. I bought a WiFI route + PCI card for 3,500. Wil try setting up the thing today evening. Will post once i get it running....... 🙄

i have done the wireless thingie in my house...its simple... heres how it goes..1. the rouet Linksys acts as an access point to ur adsl... but ur adsl wont configure the individual pcs2.assign ips to the computers in the 192.168.xxx.xxx range and also to the linksys as both the adsl n linksys have the same ip namely 192.168.1.1... so i suggest change linksys to 1.2 as linksys is easier than dlink3. put the def. gateway as 192.168.1.1 i.e the ip of the adsl router4. dns server x- 203.94.227.70 y-203.94.243.70 x is primary if ur in mum , y if ur in delhi... enjoy

Thanks for the tips... Wireless + ADSL is working fine now. This is if it works at all....There seems to be some prob with my line. I keep loosing my ADSL conn. The ADSL link light on D-Link remains on for a few minutes and then starts blinking.Have complained to MTNL, lets c. Hopefully they will rectify the line problem on Monday.

yaaa. thats a prob frm the mtnl guys... n thru wireless u can also restart the adsl router frm any room wit ur laptop.... just type 192.168.1.1 go to the D-Link router page n then tools to save n resart.... helps... sumtimes it gets connected n u don have to physically approach the router........also i suggest add a mac allow list so that even if ur neighbour happens to read this page n get the ipconfig he wont be able to access mtnl internet!!!

I was paranoid about security as well... things can messy get real quick. Had MAC filter as well as Encryption turned on before setting up MTNL.

Without encryption (WEP or even WPA if you router + card support it), anyone can read the traffic between your laptop and router. Its radio, so anyone can grab the packets flowing between routers and laptop and decode it. This can be done even if the intruder can not log on to router.

ne idea what rules sud be made in the WiFI router to access the dsl modem/router web access from the end PC?My config - DSL Line - D-Link 502T - Linksys WRTP54G - PC(on Swictch) /Laptop(On WiFi)Wonder if the PPPoE too can be established via the Wifi router!!!

if you have connected the PC to the switched ethernet ports of the wireless router, then you can configure mtnl dsl in this way(you can do it from the laptop also.)on DSL Modem/router:* Select Bridge Mode in the WAN Setting drop-down menu.* save settings and reboot.* you won't be able to access the dsl modem once it reboots.i hope u haven't disabled DHCP on your wireless router.access your Linksys and change the setup to DSL PPPOE.give the username and password and check keep alive and then give the seconds for it....thats it. save and reboot.

hey suraj, I guess I didn't make my query much clear. I have a working setup......with Wifi and DSL.. but also wanted to access to DSL modem web based configuration sitting behind the Wifi router. and wat more better tha to be able to use PPPoE directly from either of the machines, as at a time I normaly use one only.

comfig----DSL Line - D-Link 502T - Linksys WRTP54G - PC(on Swictch) /Laptop(On WiFi)no ppp s/w. the linksys router does the pppoe to dsl router which is in bridgeu know, now that i am getting an airtel too.. the requirment to increase to pooling the two connection into one... enuf to keep me busy for few days 😉
