Do we share IP address ?

Hi

I am user of BBNL for past two years or so. Recently my neighbor too got a connection through BBNL. Since he has a higher speed than mine, i usually use his wifi when i want to download something at a faster rate. I've checked both of our IP's, it is both same. Aren't the IP address supposed to be unique to each user ? Also the IP address assigned to me has been the same one ever since i started to notice it a few months ago. Aren't they supposed to be changing ? I'm sorry if this sounds too trivial

Smaller ISPs do not have access to enough ipv4 IPs so they use things like NAT(?) to allow many users to access the web using the same public IP. Each user gets a private IP. It is fine for general users but a mess for more technical stuff like running a web server from your home computer.

Thanks for the fast reply. I do plan to host a small web server for learning how to set up one, in this case is this not allowed ?

I know this isn't the site to ask these questions but Could you please guide me to what workarounds i have to be searching for ?

I think you need to check out dyndns type services. PS. There is nothing illegal about using these workarounds.

Not sure about how you get around the nat type limitations.

I have used dyndns workaround and it works just fine. You will need to find if your router supports this.

There are many videos on youtube and articles from where you can learn.

Else just ask your local operator to give you a static ip.. they might charge you for this .. typically 1 - 1.5 k per year.

OP do you get ip like this 192.168.x.x

I suppose since you are using wifi, router will assign you private ip (internal)

Public ip of your and your neighbor will always be same which the router gets (shows on speedtest)

P.S. you share ip address

Ask BBNL for Static IP. There is a small annual cost to it. I requested my local LCO who had then tied up with BBNL and he was able to provide me a static ip.
