Hi,
I got a Reliance Jio SIM yesterday. The process was relatively painless - 15 mins at the store. About 10 people in store, 2 Queues. Once I got to the head of the line, SIM was issued in a few minutes. Hopefully, other network providers also start with e-KYC with Adhaar- no need of photographs, document xerox copies etc.

The SIM works on an Airtel branded Huawei E5573 hotspot (unlocked), for data usage. But, I am not able to get SMS to work. The Device Information settings does not show my number (Unknown), and I don't see a way for me to enter it. Also, I am not sure if the SMS centre number on the device is correct. Does anybody know what the SMS centre number for Jio is? And, if I can update my phone number on the Hotspot? Anybody using this hotspot been able to get SMS to work?

A short review - The speeds are inconsistent and terrible (in Chennai). The best I have seen is about 3Mbps and sometimes I have even gone to 0.2 Mbps (I have checked speeds on both the Hotspot and a MotoG). Most of the time it is around 0.8-1Mbps. Also, if you plan to use this on a hotspot, you would need an Android phone to use Jio4G Voice app (Jio Join), to make calls. It looks like this app is not available on iOS.

man. i am so glad excitel might be available in a few days here in my locality. jio is not looking like a good option considering there is no information on when they would offer ftth widely.

SMS work out of the box. No additional configuration needed with the hotspot. Check if you're able to receive messages on the phone. Your number would show "Unknown" as this is major flaw with all the service providers. Only way to hard code your number on the sim would be to insert in an iPhone and fill the number in My Number. Moving forward, it would show up in any device that you use but it doesn't make any difference in performance or speed or nothing related to getting sms. You might need to flash the right dashboard or firmware on the hotspot incase you're not getting the SMS delivery on the phone.

I've been using the Jio sim on a Huawei E5573 device and everything was fine until few days ago, but now they have capped the speed to 200 Kbps. I called Jio care and they said the device I'm using is not part of the Welcome offer and hence they cannot say anything about the speeds. He directly said from his end that I am using it on a Huawei E5573.

He said if you insert the sim on a supported phone, the speeds should restore. I haven't tried that option yet.

LOL...Then why do the speed sucks on their own JioFi2 or even the Smartphones. As of this writing , i am downloading a file from XDA at 3MB/s and this is the only time i get these speeds. Post 8am, the magic starts to happen and by 11am i can hardly download at 512kbps up until 11:30pm.

^ Yes, the speeds do suck, but they are definitely throttling speeds when used in hotspots / dongles for some users.

I have one Jio sim on a 4G phone used as a hotspot and other on the Huawei device, at the exact same location, the Huawei device doesn't go above 200 Kbps (bits per sec) whereas the speeds on the smartphone are relatively better atleast in 1-2 Mbps.

I tested what they said, i.e. inserted the sim on a 4G smartphone, and the speeds restored to the 1-2 Mbps.
