Guys, Any idea on why there is no available WS receiver for cars ? DishTV is already planning to put DTH receivers on cars so I do not understand why we do not have WS on cars ? Any idea ?

primitive technology. i dont believe the technology allows them. though satellite players in US are capable of working in cars. no idea how Dish TV is acheiving it... though, munnabhai part 2 had a worldspace receiver in munnabhai's motorbike 😉

It's not the tech. It's govt regulations. Just as you have umpteen private news channels on cable/DTH/IPTV but you cannot have an FM station doing news!

The market is also waiting to see if WorldSpace will get permission from the Indian government to build out a network of repeater antennas on the ground.

Without such repeaters, listeners need to place their antennas with a line of sight to the satellite in the southern sky, and can't get reliable reception in their cars. XM Satellite and Sirius have such repeaters in the United States.

From USATODAY.com - Satellite radio for the rest of the world, if they'll listen

^ummm so that means that these 'repeaters' get their feed from the satellite it and then broadcast it (over FM?) Why not just broadcast it over FM.... What's the point of having a 'satellite' radio if it's not portable.

As per their FAQ here WorldSpace Satellite Radio :

Q.
Will you be launching a car receiver?
A.
Yes, WorldSpace does plan to be everywhere and cars are definitely our next destination! We are currently working towards introducing a car receiver. Watch this space for more updates.

But, don't get over excited - this has been like this for the past 2 years I have had world space 🙁

A special antenna is affixed on the roof top of the Car. The antenna automatically tracks Dish TV’s satellite placed at 36,000km orbit. It then provides signal to the Set-Top-Box (STB) through an RF cable. The STB is connected to both the LCD screen through AV output. Exactly same system as in homes except the antenna is an auto-tracking one .All the features of Dish TV available on Direct-to-Car alsol. Import Price US$ 1100, depending on the number of pieces.
