Just got MTNL DSL, help me make the most of it

Hi guys,Just stumbled onto this forum, hope somebody can help me out. I just got the MTNL Triband DSL NU connection and I have some questions. Please bear with me if this seems like a lot to ask, would appreciate if somebody can answer them1) Can somebody confirm whether it is required to switch on the DSL router after midnight for the data to count as free download or can you just leave it on and schedule your download program to start after midnight?2) I am getting a download speed of 28 KBps, is this good enough? Are there any settings which I can change in the router to increase my speed. BTW, I am not using the spliter as I dont need to have a phone connected near my PC. I have just connected the router directly into the wall socket and all the phone wiring in my house is internal. I checked the DSL status in the router and got the following result:Item Downstream Upstream Unit ======================================SNR Margin 21 26 dBLine Attenuation 32 20 dBData Rate 256 256 Kbps3) Which programs will help me make the most of this broadband connection. I usually use Limewire,are there any other programs which can be used to download stuff?4) Is it required to modify any firewall settings either in windows or the DSL router before using the popular P2P programs? I have heard somthing called port forwarding, Is it required for me? I have tried Limewire and it seems to connect properly but dont know about the torrent programsThese are all for now, plz give me some tips to help me improve my broadband experience if you have anybye...thanks

hey trivisingh welcome to the forumswell u can just leave ur router on and schedule ur download program to start after midnight and stop before 8 am and ur data transfer would be counted as freewell on a 256kbps connection ideally u should get a download speed of 32KBps and u should use a splitter whether a phone is connected near or not as for which program u can use , u can use bit torrents or irc [if u know how to use irc ] . i prefer irc as bit torrent is slow.and yes u are going to need port forwarding for irc , torrents to work

thanks for the info, gaurav. can you tell me how to do the port forwarding thing. I am giving mirc a try, will my download speed be less if I dont do port forwarding?

I'd suggest u follow the times, as they suggest u doing that...though there are no data deduction from ur daytime usage account, still why to take chances??? let everything gets stabilized and get more user reviews...till then a lil caution is not harmful... 😀2. 28 kBps is good enough...but u should still use the splitter and make sure it's connected to the main line that's coming into ur house...any connections to phone should come out of the spillter only, not before that...try that and see if u get better speeds...3. Try Ares!4. U don't need to modify any firewall settings...in most of the programs ports are forwarded by default...so u don't need to do anything manually...won't be able to comment about IRC as i don't use it 🙂and yes, welcome to the forum and the Broadband club, finally!!! 😀

Ports are automatically forwarded by clients which have support for UPNP, provided your router/modem also supports it. However its as easy to forward ports manually, just look on portforward.com for a suitable guide.

MTNL has given me the D-Link 502T router. But I dont think that it supports port forwarding. I downloaded a manual off the net which says that there should be a button for port forwarding in the advanced tab of the router settings page. But it is not there in my router settings although there is an option for virtual server, dont know if its the same. Has anybody successfully tried port forwarding with the 502?

well u can do port forwarding with this routerbut the thing is that this router has a glitch in its firmware it happens like this "when u have changed some settings from the router settings page and save settings and reboot the router. The router could just freeze up only the power led would be on rest leds won't work and not even manually reseting the router to the factory settings would work .the thing is that i can happen at ur first try at changing settings or at any other time u just don't know when it will happen"then u have to get ur router replaced to have it corrected just look at the other threads in this forum to see how many people have faced this problem so my suggestion to u is that u don't mess much with this routerlook for the guide on the net ,study it then just forward the ports to ur ip and reboot the router and pray to babaji that it should work 🙂ps: to enable port forwarding, u gotta have a static ip for ur pc (not the dynamic ip that the router assigns). so first assign a static ip to ur pc

Well yes this router has a glitch but i have been informed from my friend agnivo that a fimr ware upgrade is there for this router which can be availed at D-Link service center. Works really good. Cheers agnivo..And coming to the 2nd point port forwarding can be done to dynamic ip but u ahve to chagne the settings once u get ur PC switched on
