I talked to one of the local companies which said that four cameras would cover the entire front and side of our house. I am for now planning to get a single camera to cover the area which is the most essential for monitoring the parked car on the side of the house.

Now, this is the first time I am trying to get a CCTV camera so I have no idea which brand to get and what quality of cameras are available. The guy I talked to said that the camera he was offering had HD quality (!) and was 1.3 megapixel (or 3.1? I don't clearly remember).

I am hoping to get a camera that can take images good enough to recognize faces directly in line of vision.

Any kind of personal experiences and feedback would be helpful.

Koi hai!? I have talked to several dealers and all of them have been disappointment. No one wants to go into details about the technical aspects. Pretty much all of them have shitty software support. None of them appear to be capable of running on a Chromebook.

I am not an expert but if I would have been in your shoes, I would have asked for a demo in case I can not get one I would have ordered an Amazon fulfilled IP Camera and would have got a local electrician to do wiring for me (It is amazon fulfilled so if I do not like it return is hassle free).

how do you manage with a standalone camera? i mean ubnt has some pretty nice models. but i am not sure how to deal with storing the streams for a few weeks at least and retrieve them on demand?

i do not want to deal with the hassle of managing them manually frankly. and i want my dad to have the ability to check the videos on his tv in his room.

Hmm, I thought you can buy IP Camera of any known company (Logitech, D-Link etc) and can use their software?? Does this not work this way?

i do not know the details. some of them have internal storage. others can stream to a computer or phone where you have to record. i am not seeking a baby monitor! or an intrusion detection system that needs to be activated with a motion sensor. i want 24x7 recording that gets stored for at least a few weeks even if there is no internet access! IP cameras are probably not suited to my needs.

that is the problem. i do not want to blindly get a model and later realize that it is not working out for me. i cannot seem to find anyone who has researched into this. i guess, i would get out of the house and visit a few dealers and see what they have on offering locally. this is not something i want to manage myself.

Motion Sensor or 24x7?
Doesn't ip cameras work on internal network?
In addition Amazon should have non-ip video recording solutions, no matter who do you speak to you have to do your own research to find a product that suite your need.

CP Plus is advertising a lot these days, you may contact them.

that is the thing the people who came to my place were installation people and had little idea about the type of solutions available. websites of these companies just list the specifications without pricing. looks like i would need to do first hand research by visiting a few dealers and hopefully some of them would be helpful enough to explain the available products to help me decide on a model.

basically i was wondering if someone on the forum has done the same and could recommend a few specific models i could focus on instead of doing it from scratch. i do not want to get the basic 1.3mp models that would give you blurry faces on video. this is why i am avoiding getting four cameras together. for now the plan is to get one decent camera with a box capable of handling at least 4 cameras. i hope that the boxes are interoperable with different model of cameras from different companies :\

same here. i see cctv cameras in almost all houses in my lane. so i thought they were quite common these days 😛 i guess not.

They are common but I do not think people give a shit about details you are looking for.

The installation people you have described should be selling it to some of the people and that is why they would have agreed for a sales discussion with you in the first place.

I live in a high rise, I think if it comes to a scenario that I have to check camera feed I would have graver issues to resolve so I am not worried about CCTV for now 🙂

what are you planning man !!!!

1.3MP is more than enough for decent quality video footage, if you already have them, but they are not performing in night, you would just need a couple of IR-Array illuminator and it should drastically improve the night vision.
