Raspberry Pi 2

Got it on recommendation from @Nishant and @vedantlath. Vedant helped me install and configure. Right now it's able to connect to VPN and download torrents. I also plan to use it to keep the Reliance Broadband auto-login script running 24x7.

hehe ok. the remote client also accept multiple files in one go which works better for me as i can just download a bunch of files and add them all together. 🙂

man. browser on the pi is so baaaad. and i guess chromium would be too much for it to handle 😀

Try Iceweasel, it's a variant of Firefox, but it slows down pi even more. You can also try a light weight browser called Kweb but many website don't support it.

Right now, BT Sync is the only thing that requires me to use the browser. Because for some reason it is not letting me access the WebUI over local network like Remote Transmission. And I think it's configured fine now so I should not need to access it for a while now 😀

I plan to avoid accessing the PI directly and hopefully in a few weeks, I would be able to just remove the GUI to further lessen the load on the limited hardware. Probably not though 😛

This arrived earlier today. Seems alright. All configured now. I can now download larger torrents.

PS: Pi 2 does not seem to be capable of running external hard drives on its own. At least on default configuration. Had to edit config.txt file to get it to work. And Pi still restarted on reconnecting the hard drive. So planning to order a USB Hub now. This is turning out to be an expensive experiment!

A few updates from before...

I am now using Transmission Remote GUI for managing Transmission. This solves the problem of manually adding downloads to the app as it works as a regular desktop app and connects to torrent files and magnet links. Very cool.

I tried using GitHub - endor/kettu: Rewrite of the Transmission Web Client with jQuery, Sammy and Mustache for the browser version. Did not like it much. Ended up messing up the default UI. Had to use Vedant's help to restore it...

I am also using aria2 for regular downloads. It works great for direct HTTP(s) links for downloads. I tried using GitHub - pyload/pyload: A free and open source personal cloud storage as well as download manager for all kind of operating systems and devices, designed to be extremely lightweight and runnable on personal pc or headless server. but failed to make it work. I am using GitHub - ziahamza/webui-aria2: The aim for this project is to create the worlds best and hottest interface to interact with aria2. Very simple to use, just download and open index.html in any web browser. as the web gui for aria2.

I also plan to switch to btrfs for the microsd card sometime in near future to make it easy for image the card while Pi is running. Would update if I can get that working with help from vedant.

Yup. Amazon pricing is lower IIRC.

It comes on Amazon Lightening Deals regularly so keep an eye and save a few hundred bucks. Though eBay coupon should also work fine I guess.

There are other models on sale too from different companies. @Nishant has a model with better specs (gigabit ethernet port for example).

Someone has also listed a Jan 2016 model, Don't know whats special in it.

anyway if any user knows the difference well, or has used the latest one, please post details.
