Sify (best of the worst)
Sify keeps complaining that commercial places are using their residential lines which is why they have limits at all. Do you know of any cybercafes or are they common or what? Any other commercial activity that profits from this?

you expect cyber cafes to take the data transfer limited packages? how can they ever be profitable enough!

I mean they must have been doing it sometime right? Sometime before they had limits (not sure when that was) Maybe on another broadband service.

Well there are Sify branded cybercafes called Sify i-Ways that are I guess set up just like a CTO sets up his business i.e with his own SU and bandwidth leased from Sify. So Sify i-Ways would be explicitly commercial enterprises set up using Sify's bandwidth for the same. But I agree that it's hard to see how anyother cybercafe could function if it tried to exploit the residential packs for commercial usage with the restrictions Sify has always had, earlier by reducing our speed and now by reducing our validity.I think Sify simply means by commercial activity, heavy downloads of the order of 1 GB/day or such. They are saying that they suspect their unlimited residential packs are being used for commercial activity while they actually mean to say that don't use our bandwidth like there's no tomorrow since we won't give it to you so cheap.

they have not heard abt linux ISOs? downloading them cannot be considered commercial activity 😕

Well see a usual cybercafe needs at least 256 kbps speed. For this a cybercafe owner will buy atleast 4 packs of unlimited 48 kbps pack(assuming each gives an average of 64 kbps)So he will get 150x4=600 MB of data transfer a day600 MB is far more than required for cybercage use....bcoz people usually browse, chat and email....and dont download stuff thereSo infact the 150 MB limit a day is not at all effective in checking cybercafe misuse rather it's a nuisance to power home users.

Before having a DataOne connection, I used to download large files and saved them on USB pen drives whenever I visited Sify i-ways. Who said that there are no downloaders in Cybercafes ? 😀

I hope so, Sushubh. There were only a few cybercafes in whole Chennai which allowed me to use a pen drive! Atleast I could get a nod from some of those i-ways 🙁
